It's Xmas And We're All Doomball-ed!
Posted by Luca on 2021-12-27
Doomball screenshot"Search the maze for the ball and move it into the hole", are you able to find a simpler plot than this for a game? Of course not. Ok...now try to do that in a 3D "Doom"-like environment!

Yes Doomball is the direct port of POLF a program written by David Given for the Commodore PET which can be better described as a techdemo than a finished game, and it moves some really fast and fluid 3D maze's graphics into a considerable slice of the whole video.
It's all PETSCII, it's a conversion, hence our riddle is: who could be the author behind this porting, in light of some precious gems like this we've seen in the precious months. Yes, yes, you got him! It's Ko-Ko, once again, ultra-active once resurrected to the scene!

Play Doomball, another fresh present to you for this 264 Xmas!

Play Like A Rogue, Solve Like A Genius
Posted by Luca on 2021-12-27
Tenebra screenshotIt's the first day of the year, the solstice has come just few days ago, and the sundown still arrives in the afternoon. We actually need dark games to play in darker times...

After a first contact with the Plus/4 scene with Toop, Haplo returns to the "soaring flamingos" zone, releasing his C64 little puzzle game Tenebra, now on Plus/4 too. Tenebra absolutely looks like a Rougelike game in every aspect, but the recognizable facade actually hides...a logical game! You have to solve any level by reaching an exit gate thru the light paths and the narrow passages in the walls, planning case by case about how to enlight your steps to the target. Do it in all the 25 areas and your hero will see the light.

Tenebra is distributed as freeware, and as NYP ("name your price"), so the best you can do is to offer a coffee to Haplo for the eve, donating a minimum of 2$ here on itch.io.

The Story of Tűzoltó
Posted by Csabo on 2021-12-04
On the 3rd page of this magazine, there's a mention of a game called Tűzoltó (Firefighter), and there's even a photo of it... But it's too hard to make out! Could it be one of the programs already in our database?

One game we do have with this name comes with a hand-drawn cassette cover. Does that mean this game was actually sold commercially?

That game does not have the author mentioned, but it is a decent work for an amateur game... but why does it play the Pink Panther theme?

Well, if you're visiting Plus/4 World, chances are, you're the type of person who desperately wants to find the answers to those burning questions! Never fear, I (Csabo) managed to contact the author, and now everyone can read his, and the game's story. Enjoy!

Back To The Showbiz!
Posted by Luca on 2021-11-22
Rock Star Ate My Hamster MillenniumThe cult management game "Rock Star Ate My Hamster", known at the Plus/4 latitudes as Rockstar Manager comes back to a new life with this +3 crack released by FIRE.

Rock Star Ate My Hamster Millennium is a crack of the same game, but with 50 brand new stars at the pinnacle of their success in the twenty-years period 2000-2020 to play with, and Chris Graham, the original graphician behind the fantastic caricatures which made it famous, takes in 4 of them, in his very distinguishable style. From the super rare version called "Rock Star Goes Bizarre", another roster of 7 has been added too. From now on, it's no longer a matter of Wacky Jacko and Maradonna like we still are in the 80ies, it's time to reunite those two bros in the name of britpop, or put together again those two "Bad Seeds" in a band ;)
The super skilled ZX Spectrum (and lotta more than that!) Aleksandr Trofimchuk, aka Schafft/Brothers/COM, has kindly granted permission to heavily retouch and add one piece of his art, and this honors the overall release.

Luca has released it both on Commodore 64 and Commodore Plus/4 with no commercial intents as a passionate fanwork, consequently to the fact that previous cracks and homebrew conversions have been tolerated to date. As the free distribution of the ZX Spectrum original has been denied, the only data tape to be used with the original game will be released for this specific machine.

And now... "eat dirt Clive!"

Freescapades In The 3rd Dimension
Posted by Luca on 2021-10-14
FreescapedCreating a game with the Plus/4 version of 3D Construction Kit has always been difficult due to the various bugs sadly diffused into the whole suite. Freescaped brings together four Freescape games from C64, just to see how the Plus/4 3DCK compiler behaves if some code is added to overcome the eventual problems raising up. Once the KIT-DATA of a certain game has been candidated to be compiled, the coding fight against all the strange flaws begins, then it's time to make it NTSC compatible, to convert the color palette room by room, to modify the bitmap border in order to handle a 2nd fixed color's limitations, to convert eventual ingame music both on SID and FRQ converter, and possible any others.

The four chosen games: the original 3D Construction Kit Demogame distributed with the original kit and released as alone runnable game on Plus/4, now with the right border graphics and labels; "A Chance In Hell" by Steven Flanagan, a very busy game for the Freescape engine mainly designed for the emulation, with music by Richard Bayliss; "Cyborg 2900" by Marcel Smuz, with its long and elaborate prologue in a cinematic fashion; "Escape From Zaphod" created by by Richard Bayliss (again).

Freescaped by Luca/FIRE: four easy games to test 3D Construction Kit Plus/4. With heartfelt thanks to www.3dconstructionkit.co.uk by Stuart Wilson, the homepage whose work of preserving these and other games will never be recognized as much as it should.

To clear each level, you must sort the candies in the test tubes, so that all candies with the same color are in the same tube. You can freely move ("pour") candies from tube to tube, but only the topmost ones.

- "Classic" has 100 increasingly harder levels to play.
- "Random" allows for infinite play, with select-able difficulty.
- "Time Trial" presents a challenge with added scoring.

Árok 2021 - Online Once To Be Online Never Again
Posted by Luca on 2021-08-22
Kracken PrinceÁrok 2021, the pandemic edition of Árok Party, is over, sticking in the mind of any scener the desire to meet live in the next edition, so: let's do that online once, in order to never repeat the forced sofa experience tomorrow.

carrion has totally ruled the Gfx Compo with Kracken Prince, one of those pieces of art on the Plus/4 which make you that make you boast the great choice of different greens in your color palette (yes guys, THIS is the real Green Pass!), a stunning 320x248 MFLI picture which will be surely remembered in the near and distant future! Mao by Chronos is sooo cute and full of delicious particulars, and would have clearly deserved a higher place than the 6th it reached, the typical dithered style of Chronos simply shines in the kawaii theme he has chosen for it. 8th place for MMS with Atari Retro Feeling on Plus4, which rapresents the one and only PETSCII entry of the competition, nice retro feelings with it.

Surprisingly, there are Plus/4 droplets into the Remix Compo too, thank to Chabee and his cool remix of Exorcist's theme: Exorcist (ft. Bessie Jones)!
How not to mention the new supertoy by BSZ and Larry running on Commodore 128? SIDrip to VIC pushes a whole music video into the heart of a C128, well deserved winner of the Wild Compo.

We're getting older, buddies, but if the next Árok will be a live experience as it's ever been, the hint is: don't miss a ride, definitely!

Close Encounter! Of The Shmup Kind
Posted by Luca on 2021-08-11
EncounterWe are now aware of the fact that Ulysses777 is, among all the Plus/4 coders around, a user of unscratchable passion and a thousand resources on his side, but we are confident that no one could guess the goal of his next conversion of cult historical games. And exactly in the timelapse when nobody would be able to predict that, he kicks into the scene one of the most iconic 8bit games of the whole golden era!

Encounter is the very first game of the late Paul Woakes, a man we will never regret enough, designed and created before the foundation of Novagen. It came like a shock, it was like having Battlezone at home, but pseudo-3D, just three years after the release of Battlezone itself, a sort of 8bit miracle! It's large, it's 3D, it's insanely fast. 8 different alien plains against enemies and drones, interspersed with some fast paths full of big obstacles connecting the previous one with the forthcoming, and several useful trainers offered by Ulysses777 in order to allow the complete view of the whole game to the players of any skill.

In the middle of August, when the sweat is already going, there is now a very funny excuse to sweat even more: play Encounter, both on PAL and NTSC, and let us see your best score!

HVTC Update: Solstice Edition
Posted by Luca on 2021-06-21
Happy Solstice 2021! Let's celebrate the incoming summer with a fresh update for High Voltage TED Collection, also known as HVTC, the one that rockets it up to 771 files overall!

There are two important changes regarding the structure of the collection: as first, the hvtc/player double splitting, which was initially thought to ensure a clean code for users, beside the player's added tunes, has gone forever, leaving the one and only /hvtc folder, containing an organized substructure of self-playing .prg files; secondly, we dissolved the few groups in the folders by finally assigning all the relative tunes, and this means that now "/musicians/" folder's subdirs contain no others than the direct composers' folders for real.

10 months represent a long period of time, especially crossing one of the most prolific year for our scene, hence there are many new tunes, e.g. from the unstoppably growing's folder of Csabo with its 84 and counting, or from some unexpected outsiders like Hedgewizard, or Hoffman/LGC who has finally shown to us how to push on some TEDzakker's features, or Spektro's delicious demos testing his selfcoded work-in-progress player...and Ulysses777's "Dizzy" tunes, and BKP's...check all this out! Several important fixes follow too: some digis which were outside HVTC's boundaries have been removed, some names and files have been fixed, and, after years, we finally fixed the initialization of those nasty selfmodifying Aardvark/Leaper/Zagan Warrior intro tunes :)

Don't forget to completely delete the whole previous collection (that's the way to do at any new update!), then download/unzip the new one!
And now follows a direct link to the ZIP file.

Stop The Express!

The game is somewhat similar to Loco-Coco, but the name itself is a dead giveaway: your task is... to stop the express :-) You must make your way to the front of the train and reach the engine. You can pick up snake birds, and chuck them at the train gang. Watch the demo gameplay to see all the tactics you can use.

The game exists on C64 and ZX Spectrum as well, but the +4 version has some new additions: completely re-balanced levels, additional train designs, a new title screen (thanks to Chronos!) and title music. Enjoy!

Silk Dust: Emilia Vittorini's 3rd
Posted by Luca on 2021-06-07
Silk DustAfter a long period of beta testing, the third chapter of the Emilia Vittorini saga arrives: Silk Dust. The game comes out freeware on eighteen different machines, with some exotics including Cambridge Z88 and Olivetti M20.

In this new Emilia's adventure set in what in Italy is defined as "Giolitti era", Princess Lucilla Briccorosso is preparing for the Silk Road Race, a 10,000 km rally raid between Cairo in Egypt and Peking in China, to be done by car. And that car comes from Emilia's father's ITA workshops, so its perfect functionality, and therefore the Princess's safety, will depend on you all the way.
The game is divided in four parts. When you complete one of them, you will get a code that allows to immediately jump to the beginning of the next part, though in the Plus/4 version the three files that make up the entire game can be uploaded individually.

With Silk Dust, once again Davide Bucci will catapult you into a time where strong women and early technology will be a winning combination, in a pioneering scenario. 3, 2, 1, it's just time to run. To Peking!

Retronavigatoring Again
Posted by Luca on 2021-05-16
The TrooperRetronavigator, carrion's blog which presents stunning art and what's behind it, is back online! The author himself celebrates the event with two new astonishing pieces of art drawn by him, first on C64 in MC mode with the hardware sprites support to add graphics on the borders or within the bitmap itself, and now on Plus/4 in MFLI format.

Survivors Of 2020 is a regular 320x200 MFLI picture, its C64 version has been presented at the Transmission 64 online party, conquering the 5th place. The Trooper is the obvious renewal of one of the great classic subjects in the 80's computer scenes, displayed on a large 320x248 px canvas.

We really missed you and your fantastic touch, carrion, we all hope to see more and more of these!

666 The Number Of Releases
Posted by Luca on 2021-04-30
Turmbau Zu BabylonReceiving and browsing through an old archive of software is one of those duties we love the most. This particular archive comes from our long time mate IQ666 aka Kai Uwe B., who saved a bunch of old cassettes, and took a first look at the stuff he found adding a brief description beside its name.

The most notable thing we saved from the ashes of time is a partial collection of tapes which can be purchased at Tronic-Verlag GmbH – a very active publisher of the era in Germany, with many magazines in the stands – filled with the type-ins published in Computronic magazine, for those lazy users who didn't have time and/or patience to type the long listings. We named' em as "the Computronic Collections", looking forward to complete the list in a near future, adding the disk collections too. having the official releases has allowed us to track down and add to our archive some of the games we only have as hacked versions: Phantom (German), Castle Of Horror and Hyper Space's tape versions, Airwolf (Andreas Polefka), Flipperking, Reversi Ver 2 (now we have the author's name). We also added several hacks unearthed from the IQ666's collection, utilities and educational stuff, circa 66 programs (the number returns!), all in all.

Thank you for you donation IQ666! All the new entries are listed in the New Stuff page, feel free to have a glance at.

- "The feel of the game is highly professional [...] science fiction fans may find much of interest in what is a very well-constructed plot." (Crash)

The Last KiCHY Pack!
Posted by Chronos on 2021-03-19
Beatle QuestWe have come to the end of a long journey: the last adventure pack of KiCHY maestro is here, but luckily it still contains some surprises for you! For starters, there's Beatle Quest, in which - surprisingly - the songs of the Beatles play the lead role, but not the way we would first think! The next game is Double Fantasy, which plays in the wild west, here we have to catch a bank robber. Then we have Herakles The Early Trials, in which we can venture into the former Greek Empire, in St. Jives there's a mad scientist who terrorizes the citizens of St. Jives, in The Scoop we can step into the role of a journalist, and finally The Twilight Zone is only recommended for hardcore adventurers with nerves of steel, as it's one of the strangest adventure games we ever met.

Enjoy!

Plus/4 Matters Where Size Matters Too
Posted by Luca on 2021-03-15
Jam With TEDThe online party Lovebyte has just closed its doors after a weekend of live show, with its following of about a hundred micro and mini demos running on different machines, a breath of coding skill and fantasy by fantastic sceners. Unexpectedly, it was a well-known character (also) from the Amiga scene who introduced the C16 too, among the platforms involved.

Blueberry has released three entries under the Loonies' label for three different competitions:
- Golden Twinkle is a minidemo competing in the "Combined 64 byte intro" category, where it reached the 10th place;
- TEDhno 8 is a micro demo which has been shown in the "Combined 8 and 16 byte intro showcase"... yes we're talking about 8 bytes, 8 bytes only to perform some entertaining stuff;
- definitely the gem of the trio, Jam With TED has been ranked 7th in the "Nanogame" category, and it's nothing less than a drum machine in only 253 bytes!

Where the size matters, the pros shine brighter! Very well done, Blueberry!

Arthur Noid Gets A Map!
Posted by Csabo on 2021-03-15
Arthur Noid MapArthur Noid 3 MapArthur Noid 3 just turned up from MCG's archives. It's another level edited version of the classic original by TGH. Seeing as how a lot of people still play this game (e.g. even Arthur Noid 2 has some fierce rivalry in our Hall Of Fame), perhaps these games could use a closer look.

Have you ever wondered what all the levels look like together? Technically, there's a built-in level selector, so any player can go through each level one-by-one, but that's pretty tedious. Well, wonder no more! Arthur Noid now has a map, and so does every single derivative of this game!

Take a look, have fun comparing what changed and how between the versions!

In Diplomat's Dilemma you're a kidnapped diplomat and you must escape. If that leaves you feeling sour about diplomacy, open up Denis Through The Drinking Glass, where your task is to escape politics and go down to the pub! Cheers!

But eventually, once you stumble out of there, you'll have to face reality: there are some things one must do. Important things. Such as... getting a dog license. Well, surely one can do that without going mad? All that's needed is... let's see. Find out mother's place of birth? Get the yapping monstrosity from hell dog checked out by a vet? And how hard can navigating a goverment building be? If the little plaque here says that dog licenses are on the 3rd floor, all one has to do is press 3 on the elevator, right?... Enter Bureaucracy I! happy

Old-school Six-pack
Posted by Csabo on 2021-03-12
Logge's 1st DemoPlus/4 World is definitely the most complete archive of any and all Plus/4 software. Our slogan could be "If it's not here, it doesn't exist!" (But... that would be a dumb slogan, since we're aware that a lot of stuff is missing...) Anyway, today we've added a nice six-pack of old-school demos that were completely missing from our archives. A quick run-down: Newest Demo, Emi +4 4, The Best Hellmachine-Logo, Nils Holgersson Demo, Nemesis, Logge's 1st Demo. I'm sure a few of them will be new for most sceners.

Huge thanks to MCG for sending them to us! If you enjoy old-school demos, read on.

Tom Thumb Deluxe!
Posted by Csabo on 2021-03-11
Tom Thumb DeluxeA mere 36 years after the release of the original, Tom Thumb Deluxe is here. There were cracks and trainers for this game before, but with some fixes by RoePipi and Csabo, we're hoping this is the "ultimate" version of Tom.

If you're a hardcore gamer, Tom Thumb Deluxe will let you complete the entire game more than once, by fixing the spike issue. (Once Tom completes the pyramid, the game restarts, but with some spikes added. One of these new spikes were added in such a way that progress was impossible at some point.) The game is now also fully NTSC compatilble for the first time, and has several other minor fixes.

Casual gamers might want to turn on some (or all) the cheats for more forgiving gameplay and give it a go. It's a humbling experience; when you've traversed what feels like a HUGE part of the pyramid, and think "oh, I must be near the end", the game throws some brand new never-before-seen element at you and just keeps going.

Tom Thumb Deluxe still runs on 16K machine and has a little intro to wrap it all up. Enjoy!

Tron +4: Old Classic, New Tools
Posted by Luca on 2021-03-08
Tron +4This game was around since days, and after a short period of time in which we made a happy acquaintance of its author, new on the Plus/4 scene, here comes the official release!

Tron +4 represents the return of an old classic, in its most basic – and therefore also more usable – form, as a test of a new programming tool – Mad-Pascal compiler, originally dedicated to Atari XE/XL machines, now extended to Plus/4 too. High five with our new friend zbyti, the author of both Tron +4 and its generating tool. The game itself looks apparently simple, but the high responsive commands and the "Vs. three" challenge raises up the overall playablility.

With a brand new programming tool by our side, we expect new releases from zbyti and from whoever will use it, enpowering the Polish scene more and more.

The Farmer's Daughter!
Posted by Chronos on 2021-02-06
The Farmer's DaughterI guess everyone thought there would never be more KiCHY adventure packs! Well, everyone is mistaken big time! In fact, adult fantasies play a major role in the current pack. In The Farmer's Daughter, our car breaks down in front of a farm where a fairly young girl will be there to "help" us. But if that weren't enough, there's more, sex - I mean Sweet Sixteen, plus you can take part in the role of Alfred in two horny adventures, namely the Soho Sex Quest and Herpes or Bust! Be good and wear rubber before loading these programs!

Genius Series Comes To An End!
Posted by Luca on 2021-01-22
Genius 3It's the end of the entire saga! Following the storyline of Daniele Liverani's rock opera, it's now time for the little European prince to finish his dream...among the planets!

The mechanism is the same, the worlds are totally new ones: Genius needs to run through the eight magic toy planets. As Genius. you'll have to follow the key sequences and unlock all the secret caverns of the toy caves, grab the toys, and avoid killer enemies. To add fun to the ride, see if you can discover the undocumented secrets. including secret passages, invisible toys, extra bonus lives, immortality, and much more!

Technically speaking, Genius 3 is a declared improvement of the very first game engine, and a fresh new update of the Release 04 engine from which the author Twinspirit32 has previously released Genius 2 and renewed Genius once; hence, he has caught up the chance to pack up a Release 05 edition both of Genius and Genius 2!

Find all the secrets, see all the caves, let's finish the story in the best ending ever, download and play Genius 3!

The Dreams Come(back) True!
Posted by Luca on 2021-01-05
50Hz FTW!New year, good old friends! The Dreams is back on Plus/4!

In the very first days of 2021, a cool mate of the scene makes his comeback from the C64 side of his skilled code. It's Ninja/The Dreams, who has converted his own entry ranked 11th in the ECM Mode Demoeffect Competition.
Big spoiler, as it's called 50Hz FTW!, the demo features a double Chessboard with RGB crossing effect, running over a tic-toc bouncing text displayed in Bump Mapping, with a fantastic 4x tune composed by Degauss/TEK...and (don't read further if you hate spoilers) all this stuff moves within a single PAL frame! Should be added that the whole show runs in ECM graphic mode? ;)

Our hopes fly to more and more Plus/4 releases from The Dreams!
