 Regarding 1942

Here:

http://plus4world.com/software/1942

It is said that no one has ever seen that game. Well that was the 2nd game I've ever played on plus4, and it was really good. Unfortunatelly I got rid of all the tapes once my plus4 died, but at least you know for sure that the game indeed existed on plus4. happy

 Re: Regarding 1942

Sorry, but that's no proof at all. Even if we knew you well (which we don't), how could we be sure that you remember correctly after 20+ years? Maybe it was some other game. Maybe you had a C=64 and you're confusing it with the plussy (a lot of people do that actually).

This is one of those things where "I'll believe it when I see it".

 Re: Regarding 1942

Anyway you could check this similar title: Reach for the Sky.
But please, feel free to talk about technical aspects of the game you'd played on your Plus/4...

@Luca: Yes, 1942 and Reach for the Sky are not only similar, but I would say it is the -same- game. It looked -exactly- the same, but the game title wasn't Reach for the Sky but 1942.

@Csabo: You don't have to believe me, but I do remember very well because I had only 12 games for 2 years back then and 1942 was 2nd of them. wink

 Re: Regarding 1942

Reach for the Sky is Gremlin Graphics/Micro Projects. 1942 is Elite. Those are two totally different (and back in the day rival) companies. So if you had/saw Reach for the Sky by Gremlin (possibly with a different cover/title screen), that's fine, an interesting claim. But it still doesn't have anything to do with Elite's 1942, you just confirmed that you have never owned or seen that game.

 Re: Regarding 1942

Hmm... Strange, I am 100% sure that the title was 1942 and not "Reach for the sky", but the rest of the screenshots are exactly the same. I took my time and make a search for 1942 and "Reach for the sky" on google, and found that "Reach for the sky" can be runned with SYS 8192, also the game I used to have ran with SYS 8192. So chances are that it was indeed "Reach for the sky" what I played, but why was the title changed to 1942 - I have no idea. Damn why don't have the tapes any more.

 Re: Regarding 1942

Took your time on google? happy That's a good start, but so did we (several one of us), and we did it years ago. And also searched through actual magazines, tried to contact the publisher (a lot of us did, on different occasions), so really, a TON of effort went into trying to hunt down this game. 1942 is kind of a big deal for us. It was even the subject of April 1st jokes. Sorry if I sound so negative, but after all this, try to imagine how it feels if someone comes along and says "Oh yeah, I confirm that this existed, but have no proof".

 Re: Regarding 1942

First of all no hard feelings whatsoever. Secondly, I am not so sure that it existed anymore either. But I know that someone did modify the "Reach for the sky" to have the 1942 on the title and it was available in Yugoslavia in 1987 under that title. Since we had only pirated software there at the time, my guess is that someone just changed the title because 1942 was popular on c64, so that more people buy it.

Sorry for the false alarm, but I was convinced that I indeed played 1942 and good luck with solving this mystery. happy

lol all this fuss over a retro computer game. i'm still scratching my head aver the lost ocean games in which i seem to be the only one who remembers seeing the C16 outlay covers advertised in a home shopping catalogue, although the release date said TBA.

 Re: Regarding 1942

Nice to see you guys having it out with 1942. Back when I was on the case of saying like "no way was it ever released", it felt like you guys were ignoring me. Maybe in hope it would show... wink

Love to see it as always!

 Re: Regarding 1942

btw out of interest. how did you come across them?

it's a shame Ocean never took our little beasts a bit more seriously. there was a good enough game market out there to warrant the support.
