IN THE 8 BITS ERA,IN THE '80S,HERE IN
ITALY EVERYBODY OWNED A C64 THAT COSTS

ITALIAN LIRA AT THAT TIME. TO GIVE YOU

I HAD NO C64... THEN SOMEONE OF MY
FRIENDS DID BUY THE C64 WITH TAPE,AND I
WAS STUNNED BY THE SOFTWARE:SIMON'S
BASIC,FORT APOCALYPSE,SPRITES...
YOU HAVE TO KNOW THAT I JUST STARTED TO
WORK,AND KNEW NOTHING ABOUT PROGRAMMING:
AT SCHOOL,WE STUDIED NOTHING ABOUT THIS,
ONLY MATH AND STATISTIC. BUT AT MY JOB'S
PLACE,WE HAD THE ACCOUNTANT MACHINE THAT
WAS A MILESTONE FOR ME AND MY "DIGITAL
LIFE". I DID START TO "FOLLOW" AND "SPY"
THE TECHNICIANS AND PROGRAMMERS THAT
OFTEN CAME TO THE FIRM,IN ORDER TO
REPAIR THE MACHINE - THIS HAPPENED VERY
OFTEN - AND TO MODIFY BAL PROGRAMS. SOON
I STARTED TO DO SOMETHING EXPERIMENTALLY
AND WITH LOTS OF RESETS!
AFTER I WAS ABLE TO "PROGRAM" SOME
LITTLE THINGS,I STRONGLY WISHED TO OWN A
HOME COMPUTER.
AN APPLE COSTS ALOT AND WAS BEYOND MY
POSSIBILITIES. C64 I DID NOT LIKE CAUSE
THE CURSOR KEYS,AND CAUSE THE LOW BASIC
ZIPPED BY PEEK'N'POKE. A GOOD DAY,I'VE
SEEN A TV SPOT ABOUT THE PLUS/4 AT A
GOOD PRICE:420.000 ITALIAN LIRA,THAT NOW
WE CAN TRANSLATE IN ABOUT 220 EUROS.
WELL,I DID PHONE IN ORDER TO ASK THEM IF
THERE WAS A CHEAT...NO,ALL SEEMED RIGHT.
I HAD TO DRIVE FOR ABOUT 60+60KM TO
REACH THE STORE WHERE PLUS/4 WAS SOLD. I
DID BUY THE PLUS/4 WITH TAPE UNIT. THEN,
I HAD THE MACHINE CONNECTED WITH TV SET

ON MUSIC CASSETTES.

THERE WAS NOBODY I KNEW OWNING A PLUS/4
AND IT WAS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH ANY OTHER
COMPUTER BUT THE C16. I STARTED TO
PROGRAM IT,FIRST IN BASIC.
ONE DAY,ONE OF MY FRIENDS,A C64 USER,DID
LEND ME HIS "C64 PROGRAMMER GUIDE" BOOK.
I READ IMMEDIATELY WITH GREAT INTEREST.
SUDDENLY,A CRAZY IDEA CAMES IN MY MIND.
I KNEW ABOUT THE NON-COMPATIBILITY
BETWEEN C64 AND PLUS/4,BUT ALL THE SAME
I DID ATTEMPT TO WRITE A BRIEF ML C64
ROUTINE INTO PLUS/4 MEMORY: IT WORKED! I
REMEMBER VERY WELL THAT DAY:I DISCOVERED
THE JUMP TABLE COMPATIBILITY. THIS MEANT
THAT I HAD THE INFO ABOUT KERNAL
ROUTINES FROM THE C64 BOOK. MY FIRST -
ALWAYS DREAMT - PROJECT WAS TO BUILD A
SW TABLE IN ORDER TO ADD NEW COMMANDS TO
THE STANDARD OS. I HAD TO THINK/PLAIN/
WRITE/TEST ALL THE STUFF BUT KERNAL
ROUTINES,EVEN BY RE-INVENTING SOME
BASICS ABOUT PROGRAMMING,BUT AT LEAST
SVS-OS WAS BORN.

IN XMAS,A 1541 DRIVE ARRIVED,AND
FURTHERMORE I WAS ABLE TO FIND A BOOK
ABOUT PLUS/4 WITH A BRIEF BUT PRECIOUS
MEMORY MAP AND TED REGISTERS TABLE.
AT THE TIME,I'VE BOUGHT SOME GAMES ON
TAPE,THEN I FOUND A MAGAZINE DEDICATED
TO CBM'S 8BITS COMPUTERS. MAINLY IT
SPOKES ABOUT C64,BUT IT HAD A FEW PAGES
ABOUT C16/+4 TOO. AND ON AN ISSUE,A GUY,
ALEX/FIRE DID PUBLISH HIS ADDRESS
CLAIMING HE WAS IN CONTACT WITH FOREIGN
USERS,FROM COUNTRIES WHERE PLUS/4 HAD
BEEN VERY WIDESPREADT,LIKE GERMANY AND
HUNGARY. OF COURSE,I RAN TO WRITE HIM,
AND I DID RECEIVE SOME STUFF.
FURTHERMORE,ALEX TOLD ME ABOUT RDG,AN
USER THAT WAS LIVING JUST 10KM FAR FROM
ME, AND PREVIOUSLY BOTH OF US DIDN'T

THE FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN US HAD GROWN,SO
WE DECIDED TO NAME "FIRE" OUR GROUP.

IN THAT TIME,I NEED TOOLS TO DEVELOP ML
STUFF. WE HAD ONLY VERY FEW ROUTINES,
THEN I DECIDED - AS MASTER ZAKS SAID -

STARTED TO WRITE THE SVS-MACROASSEMBLER.
WHEN THE FIRST WAS RUNNING,I DID SEND IT
TO ITALIAN COMMODORE OFFICE - NO REPLY -
AND TO THE MAGAZINE. THE MAGAZINE
REPLIED TO ME THAT "THE WORK IS TOO MUCH
SPECIFIC",HENCE THE WERE NOT ABLE TO
PUBLISH IT -!-.

THE SWAPPING IN THOSE YEARS RANS VERY
WELL:I REMEMBER I ALWAYS WAS WAITING FOR
THE POSTMAN. WHEN HE DELIVERED SOMETHING
I IMMEDIATELY CLASSIFIED ALL THE NEW
TITLES,AND UPDATED MY LISTS. I SENT TO
ALL MY CONTACTS THE STUFF THEY HAD
REQUESTED,I WAS ON THE "BEST SWAPPER"

ASKED ME TO DEVELOPE A NEW VERSION OF

SVS-MEGA-ASSEMBLER THAT FULLY USES THE 4

CREATED A NEW DEMO,AND WANTED TO SWAP
ONE OF HIS NEW STUFF,HE CLAIMED THT HE
ALREADY HAD THAT DEMO: HE DID NOT KNOW
THAT WE CREATED THAT LAST NIGHT AND HE
WAS THE FIRST PERSON EVER SAW THAT OTHER

HIS WORK. WHEN I WAS ONLY 5 YEARS OLD,I
KNEW SOME COMPUTER TECHNICAL INFORMATION
FROM HIM,LIKE HT-1080Z,PRIMO AND ZX
SPECTRUM,BUT MY FIRST COMPUTER WAS
COMMODORE 16 AND PLUS/4 IN 1982. I
ADORED EARLY COMPUTER GAMES,NOT ONLY
PLAYING BUT WRITING THEM TOO. I LEARNT
BASIC PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE AND I WROTE A
SKIING GAME,BUT LATER BASIC WAS TOO SLOW
