1974 IN ZALAEGERSZEG,AT THE WEST SIDE OF
HUNGARY. FIRST TIME I GOT IN TOUCH WITH
COMPUTERS WAS ABOUT IN 1982, OUR
NEIGHBOURS HAD A COMMODORE 64 FROM WEST
GERMANY WITH A DATASETTE. AND WITH ONE
CARTRIDGE: SOCCER II. WE PLAYED A LOT
WITH THAT GAME,ESPECIALLY IT WAS THE
ONLY ONE. WHEN I WAS 9,MY FATHER
BORROWED A VIC20 FROM A COLLEAGUE TO
MAKE SOME FINANCIAL CALCULATIONS EASYER
THAN WITH A CALCULATOR. IT WAS A SINGLE
COMPUTER WITHOUT A DATASETTE OR ANY
PERIFERIALS,ALSO FROM WEST GERMANY.
OF COURSE,I TRIED TO DO SOME PROGRAMMING
ON IT,BUT I COULD ONLY RUN AND DRAW WITH
THE CURSOR ON THE SCREEN. MY BROTHERS
CAME HOME IN THE EVENING,THEY HAD SOME
PROGRAMMING PRACTICE FROM SCHOOL,SO THEY
SHOWED ME HOW A BASIC PROGRAM CAN LOOK
LIKE. NEXT DAY I WROTE SOME LITTLE
PROGRAMS,THERE WERE IFS AND THENS AND
GOTOS AND INPUTS IN IT. I COULDN'T LEAVE
THE COMPUTER. IT WORKED! IT WAS FUN.
THIS VIC20 WAS BORROWED AGAIN ONE TIME,
SOME WEEKS LATER I THINK. I DO NOT
REALLY REMEMBER WHAT I DID,BUT I
REMEMBER CLEARLY THAT MY OLDER BROTHER
TYPED IN A LONGER BASIC PROGRAM FROM A
BOOK ALL THE NIGHT,AND I WAS SLEEPING
THERE BEHIND THE COMPUTER MEANTIME. THE
ONLY PROBLEM WAS THAT WITHOUT ANY
PERIFERIALS,WE COULD NOT SAVE THE
PROGRAM TO ANYWHERE,AND WE HAD TO SWITCH
THE BOX OFF.
THE NEXT YEAR I ALWAYS WANTED TO DO
PROGRAMMING. I WANTED TO KNOW EVERYTHING
ABOUT COMPUTERS:HOW IT WORKS, WHAT IS A
CPU,RAM,ROM. I NEVER USED HT1080Z,A
HUNGARIAN COMPUTER,AND CPU Z80,BUT I
READ A BOOK OF IT,MACHINE CODE,ETC..
VIRTUALLY I COULD WRITE Z80 MACHINE CODE
PROGRAMS,BUT I COULD NEVER TRY IT. IT
WAS A TERRIBLE YEAR, I WANTED TO DO
PROGRAMMING BUT I DID NOT HAVE A
COMPUTER FOR THIS. ONE OF MY FRIENDS HAD
A SINCLAIR ZX SPECTRUM/48K WITH A TAPE
CABLE,SOMETIMES HE LET ME TO TRY
SOMETHING,BUT WE RATHER PLAYED. THERE
WERE PRIMO'S,HUNGARIAN TERRIBLE
CREATIONS CALLED "COMPUTER" IN SCHOOL,
SOMETIMES MY MATHEMATICS TEACHER LET ME
IN THE COMPUTER ROOM,AND I TRIED THE
BASIC PROGRAMS THAT I WROTE ON PAPERS.
OH,YES. AND I EXAMINED THE ZX SPECTRUM'S
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM A LOT. I WANTED TO BUILD
A COMPUTER AT MY AGE OF 9. I THOUGHT
FONDLY IT ONLY NEEDS A Z80 CPU,AND THE
REST CAN BE DONE EASILY. LUCKILY, NEXT
YEAR, IN 1985, WE GOT A C16 FOR
CHRISTMAS AT HOME,WITH 16K RAM AND A
DATASETTE! SO I DID NOT HAVE TO BUILD MY
OWN COMPUTER...
AFTER THAT I ALWAYS DID COMPUTERING.
ALSO INSTEAD OF LEARNING OF COURSE. WE
DID NOT HAVE TOO MUCH GAMES FOR C16,THE
FIRST THREE WERE TYCOON TEX,XARGON WARS
AND PUNCHY. BUT I DID NOT CARE TOO MUCH,
I RATHER PROGRAMMED. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT:
SOME MACHINE CODE,BASIC PROGRAMS, ETC..
EVERY SATURDAY AND SUNDAY I WOKE UP
EARLY AND STARTED TO WRITE SIMPLE BASIC
GAMES. THEY WERE ALMOST READY WHEN THE
FAMILY WOKE UP. I LOVED DOING THIS.
LATER,MY BROTHERS HEARD OF A GUY IN THE
TOWN,CALLED TIBOR,WHO HAD A LOT OF
GAMES. HE PLAYED IN THE SAME TOWN
ORCHESTRA WHERE MY BROTHERS DID. SO,
FINALLY,WE MET HIM AND COPIED SOME
GAMES. GOOD OLD TIMES,THIS WAS LEGAL IN
HUNGARY.

AVAILABLE,SO I SEARCHED FOR AS MANY
ENTRY POINTS AND ADDRESSES IN THE C16
ROM AS I COULD,AND WROTE THEM BESIDE THE
C64 ADDRESSES WITH A PENCIL. TIBOR'S
FIRST THING TO DO WAS TO BUY THE SAME
BOOK AND TO COPY THE WHOLE TRANSLATION.
SO, IT WAS OUR C16 ROM LIST.
MY FIRST CONVERSION WAS"SARGON II"FROM
VIC20. IT WAS A FUNNY STORY. MY FATHER
BROUGHT A VIC20 CARTRIDGE CALLED SARGON
II FROM SOMEONE. HE IS A GOOD
CHESSPLAYER,HE WAS INTERESTED IN THIS
GAME. HE ASKED ME IF I CAN DO ANYTHING
WITH IT. I TOLD HIM THAT WE HAVE A C16
AND THIS CARTRIDGE CAN NOT BE PLUGGED
INTO IT,BECAUSE IT HAS A SMALLER PORT.
EVEN IF WE COULD DO IT,IT WOULDN'T WORK,

SAID NO. IT CAN NOT BE DONE. THIS GAME
IS IN A CARTRIDGE,IT STARTS WHEN I POWER
ON THE BOX. AND ANYWAY,THIS GAME IS
WRITTEN FOR VIC20,SO IT WILL NOT RUN ON
C16. BUT... I WAS THINKING ON IT. IF I
COULD RIP THE GAME SOMEHOW... WHAT WOULD
HAPPEN IF I PLUG THE CARTRIDGE AFTER
POWERING ON THE BOX...? I TRIED IT. IT
FROZE OF COURSE. HM. THEN I TRIED TO
PLUG THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CARTRIDGE,
THEN THE LEFT. IT DIDN'T FREEZE! I MADE
SOME PEEKS ON THE ROM ADDRESSES,THE ROM
WAS THERE! UNBELIEVABLE, BUT TRUE. OK. I
COULD COPY THE ROM, BUT I CANNOT SAVE IT
TO ANYWHERE. WE HAD A DATASSETTE FOR THE
C16 ONLY AND NOTHING FOR THE VIC20. SO.
I THOUGHT IF I COULD MAKE A ONE BIT
CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO COMPUTERS
SOMEHOW,I COULD TRANSFER ANYTHING. LIKE
A TAPE TURBO,THAT I WROTE A LOT BEFORE.
FINALLY,I CONNECTED THEM ON THE FLOPPY
PORT. ONE WIRE FOR THE GND AND ONE FOR
THE DATA. I LOOKED FOR THE VIC20 I/O
PORTS WITH THE HELP OF THE C64 INTERNALS
BOOK,WHICH SAID THAT THE C64 AND VIC20
ROMS ARE THE SAME,JUST SOME ROM PARTS
ARE RELOCATED BY S2000. SO I COULD PEEK
THE I/O ADDRESSES FROM THE ROM ROUTINES.
THEN I WROTE A LITTLE MACHINE CODE
FUNCTION WHICH TRANSFERRED ONLY ONE BYTE
TO THE C16, AND MADE A BASIC PROGRAM
WHICH POKED THIS MACHINE CODE TO THE
MEMORY,THEN PEEKED THE ROMS SARGON II
+VIC20 ROMS AND TRANSFERRED THEM TO THE
C16. IT WORKED! I SAVED THE ROMS TO A
TAPE QUICKLY. I HAD THE GAME. THE ONLY
PROBLEM WAS THAT IT WAS FOR VIC20, HEH.
I HAD A MAGAZINE,CALLED"MIKROSZAMITOGEP
MAGAZIN",THERE WAS A YELLOW FORMULA1 CAR
ON THE FRONT PAGE AS I REMEMBER, IT
CONTAINED AN I/O PORT DESCRIPTION OF THE
VIC20,VIDEO CHIP,ETC.. IT HELPED A LOT.
I STARTED TO CONVERT THE GAME TO C16. I
WAS CHECKING AND MODIFYING THE CODE FOR
HOURS,THEN I THOUGHT I SHOULD TRY IT. I
HAD A DATASETTE ONLY SO I WAS TOO LAZY
TO SAVE THE CODE. I RAN IT INSTEAD. IT
WAS QUITE GOOD,BUT THE CHESS TABLE
LOOKED STRANGE,IT WAS SHOWN DIAGONALLY!?
I TRIED TO CORRECT IT FOR A LONG TIME,
BUT I DID NOT WORK. I WAS GETTING ANGRY,
I POWERED IT OFF... WITHOUT SAVING THE
CODE. ABOUT TEN MINUTES LATER I HAD AN
IDEA,WHAT THE PROBLEM COULD BE... BUT I
HAD TO CONVERT THE WHOLE PROGRAM AGAIN.
LUCKILY IT WAS 8K ONLY. FINALLY,THE
PROBLEM WAS THAT VIC20 HAD 22 CHARACTERS
PER LINE,THE C16 HAD 40,AND THERE WAS A
ROUTINE WHICH MULTIPLIED A NUMBER BY 22,
BUT I DID NOT REALISE IT.

ONE. AFTER THAT I TRIED SOME OTHER CHESS

A SPECTRUM-LIKE GAME,CALLED TIR NA NOG.
AND I DON'T KNOW WHICH CAME AFTER. AFTER
THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR CONVERTABLE GAMES
ALL THE TIME. THERE WERE RUMOURS,THAT I
HAVE A SECRET CONVERTER,WITH WHICH I CAN
CONVERT C64 GAMES EASILY. BUT I ALWAYS
HAD TO ANSWER,THAT SORRY,THIS PROGRAM IS
IN MY HEAD. SOME PEOPLE DID NOT REALLY
UNDERSTAND,THAT I DO NOT KNOW,HOW TO PLA
Y WITH THE CONVERTED GAMES, I DON'T KNOW
THE SOLUTION FOR AN ADVENTURE FOR E.G..
BUT I NEVER REWROTE THE WHOLE GAME. I
DID NOT KNOW WHAT IS INSIDE,I DID NOT
CARE THE MAIN LOGIC. I JUST CONVERTED
WHAT I HAD TO. THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
THE TWO COMPUTERS,AND THIS WAS MAINLY
THE I/O HANDLING. KEYBOARD,JOYSTICK,
GRAPHICS,SOUND,TAPE AND FLOPPY THINGS.
THE MEMORY MAPPING WAS A BIT DIFFERENT,
I HAD TO DO SOME TRICKS SOMETIME. AND
THERE WERE TRICKS FOR THE OTHER
PROBLEMS:GRAPHICS,DISK/TAPE HANDLING,
AND OF COURSE,THE SOUND. BUT IT WAS A
CHALLENGE FOR MYSELF. ONE TIME COVBOY
FROM COMMODORE VILAG MAGAZINE ASKED ME
TO WRITE A NOT TOO LONG DOCUMENTATION
ABOUT THIS CONVERTING. BUT I SAID."SORRY
I CAN'T". THERE ARE NO UNIVERSAL
SOLUTIONS,YOU JUST HAVE TO KNOW BOTH
SYSTEMS AND THINK. OK,I COULD WRITE TIPS
AND TRICKS,AS HE ASKED ME,BUT FINALLY I
DIDN'T. HM,SOUND CONVERSION WAS FUNNY. I

REMEMBER IT WAS RIPPED BY SOME OTHER
"CODERS". I THINK THEY DID NOT KNOW HOW
IT WORKS,JUST REALIZED THAT THE C64
FREQUENCY GOES IN,THE +4 FREQUENCY COMES
OUT. SO THEY COPIED IT BYTE BY BYTE. I
SAW SOME DEMOS WHERE THE "CODERS" WERE
VERY PROUD OF THEIR MUSIC,JUST THEY
FORGOT TO NOTICE THAT MY CONVERTER
ROUTINE WORKS INSIDE,HEH. LATER I MADE
ANOTHER FRQ-CONVERTER ROUTINE,WHICH WAS
MUCH FASTER,IT USED MULTIPLYING FROM A 8
BIT TABLE. AS I KNOW I USED IT IN
BORROWED TIME AND TASS TIMES. AND MAYBE
SOMEWHERE ELSE...

DID NOT SPEAK TO ANYONE JUST WATCHING

WAS RUNNING ON C16 AND I WAS SMILING.
AND I WANTED TO SHOW IT TO SOMEONE,FOR
EXAMPLE TO MY BROTHERS. OR I WENT TO
TIBOR AND SHOWED IT TO HIM. HIS FATHER
WAS VERY HAPPY BECAUSE IT WAS GENERALLY
