 | Re: Captain Slim
What I appreciate the most about Epy's games, is the modern vision he has about the game's design. Which, once applied to a hyper vintage classic game's scheme, plays a role of striking contrast at the interface of the two, and the merging of the two, always works greatily!
Lists. What I like of it: ALL. What I would add: diagonal movements, run option. |

 | Re: Captain Slim
When I wrote that I love Epy's modern approach to the game design, I was thinking – among other features – mainly to the concept of counting no lives but halving the score at every continue. I guess that this makes the game fit for the Hall of Fame, and you're the first entry @TRP !
Oh, I see you're already in, good! I edited your entry this way. The main condition to get classified with an entered score here, is to have completed the game, otherwise I could post a heavily not halved yet score of thousands when I'm at 20% of the game completion. So Score1: (null) and ScoreString: (Completed/Uncompleted). Therefore, the score goes in Score2: 3655.
Please all of you, tell me if this would work for you, I guess it should be good but of course further opinions and suggestions are welcome. Play Captain Slim! And vote for it, as for the other releases too. |

It's great to see such high quality exclusive games being made for plus/4! Smooth implementation, good theme music, huge varied map and cute characters. Congratulations to all the contributors!
It's got a very good foundation, but a little more polish on the gameplay would make it more enjoyable. What I missed the most is that there is no diagonal movement, and generally no way to dodge opponents, and no running out of projectiles or other resources to add a tiny tactical layer to the game.
Due to the fact that the player starts from the starting position after every death, I would only play it with cheat. |

Ah I forgot to mention a third feature I would have seen. Updating my lists:
What I like of it: ALL. What I would add: diagonal movements, run option, different behavior for different baddies. |

First of all, thanks to Csabo for the great music and Chronos for the great graphics. The original graphics was very very simple.
Thank you guys for the positive words and that you like this game.
Very important for me there's no life count, I always hated that in the games, I think I'm not the only one who feel this. Of course there's always need some punishment if you don't play enough good, need some practice and you can be good player. I didn't want to use diagonal movement, only enemies can do this. You cannot escape from them just simple run, you have to always shoot them all, if you want to go through the path. |

I also think that the diagonal movements for the captain can make the game worse. |

Grat @Epy, really good work, I really loved this!
Soon, I will roll my new game too! And that will be the first in that series, that I talk about. Or just I wrongly remember, that we talk about an idea at Árok party? |

Thanks
This game is like almost all games:
Explore all the levels, shoot everything that moves, collect all the objects you find, open all the doors that are locked, and most importantly don't touch the dangerous creatures |

I wonder how the game would feel like if it had ambient sounds like the crashing of waves and cries of seagulls in the seashore screens, bird tweets in the forest screens and so forth? |

Very cool game! nice presentation, gfx and sound is top!
@Epy I am with @gerliczer: some kind of ambient sound would have been great, like in "Csavargás a Gombák". It would greatly improve the immersion, not to speak it would be one of the first game supporting this important feature.
We have the NST SID card, the Reseed V2 from @SukkoPera, and the ReVox also from Sukkopera. YAPE also supports Digiblaster output too. Common thing of them, that they have an 8bit DAC at the same address. So playing a short 8 bit digital sample could not be easier than now.
Sure, it takes some memory, and dunno how much left in the memory, but very short samples should not take too much space. |

Thank you MMS and Haegar
This is a great idea, with the ambient sound the game atmosphare can be much better.
I think playing digi sounds in the background is not an option, because of the memory limit (maybe only 100-200 bytes free) and the CPU time (in the game there are full masked sprites and there are some screens where 7 sprites shown in same time). I think we can reduce these problems with native SID sounds. SID has many options playing noises and sounds with different waveforms, envelopes, etc. I have to tell you I'm not a SID programmer expert. So, basecally I don't know how to make SID sound effects, I'm sure I need help.
First I have to check the free memory in the game and read documents about programing SID chip.
I forget something, the SID registers are originally in the memory at $d400-$d41f, this memory area is used by the game map. As I can see in the Yape the registers are can be $fd40-$fd5f or $fe80-$fe9f. In the game the memory above $fc00 is free. |

Nice idea indeed, but I push on the pure TED sound, I would decisely prefer it, in order to achieve the maximum result on the real basic machine. Retrogaming is ethically based on the optimisation on retro hardware, otherise you can do your own retro styled PC/Switch/PS5 imitative game
Also, they're basically timed or pseudorandom sfx, me and @KiCHY already did it 15 years ago in Adventures In Time. Clearly, this is my personal opinion only, I'm here only to try to be useful... |

@Luca you are absolutely right the Plus/4 is Plus/4 not a mixed machine. I prefer TED sound too in the games. Good TED effects are push the games quality more higher.
But... I made a very simple effect player (sound pitch, sound type, time, volume). We need a totally different and more complexed player for the effects and the background sounds. And the problems are still exists, memory and CPU time. I checked the code and I didn't use the memory under $0800, so we can use it for playing sounds. But the CPU time can be the problem. |
