 SIDcards massive needing

Ok, a large number of contacts asked me for SIDcard, counting lotta Italian C= fans, but also important coders of the c64 side. Personally, I would buy another couple.
It seems we need to rebirth this hardware and spread it like hell.
Who can do it? Bionic?

 Re: SIDcards massive needing

Obviously the hard part is finding SIDs...... buying working C64s on Ebay just to remove the SID can be very expensive.

 Re: SIDcards massive needing

Finding a SID chip for the card could be the problem of the buyer! So it is not necessary to give SID chip with the card.

Luca: How many people did actually ask you? It would be interesting to get to know the size of the "market".

 Re: SIDcards massive needing

Well, Tim, I should put up a little poll, but I guess lotta ppl. E.g., I'll buy 2 for sure, but also there are many c64 users that have their own +4 or c16 expanded, try asking in #c-64 channel and you'll receive a dozen of sure request here too. I'm sending a message in the Italian mailinglist, then I'll tell you...

Tim, could a buyer get the card without SID if he just has one?

 Re: SIDcards massive needing

luca: I doubt there is any way to sell SID-Cards _with_ a SID. They are simply not available anymore on the free market.

 Re: SIDcards massive needing

Well, that's still no problem for me and I think for most who want it deliberately happy Is the SID socketed or soldered in the C64?

 Re: SIDcards massive needing

I would be very interested for a SID card, too.
BTW: it is not a great problem getting a C64 on eBay here in Germany for under 10 EUR.

 Re: SIDcards massive needing

Just something that may need pointing out...

I've just found the schematic of the SIDcard, and I've noticed that it uses the 8580 SID chip. So, (if I'm not mistaken) a 6581 will not work (or at least not sound correct) because it requires a higher voltage (12v instead of 9v).

So am I right that you need to look for new-style C64's?

 Re: SIDcards massive needing

Yes, you're right Ulisses777, in facts my SIDcard supports 8580 new SID. BTW, I also know there are other cards that support 6581 too, maybe the Csory's...

I would by one too... I have old and new SIP chip as well.

 Re: SIDcards massive needing

The SIDcard that Jim Hehl sent me has the newer SID.

I have never tried it. I am afraid I'll break it if I use it.

 SID chips (8580) on eBay.de ?

There is a bunch of these chips on auction at eBay Germany: Commodore IC 8580R5

Is it the correct chip which would be needed for SID cards?
The seller obviously is an electronic parts shop which claims to have a lot of Commodore ICs on stock.

 Re: SIDcards massive needing

Yup, you need the 8580 SID for a sidcard.

You don't want a 6581 SID.

The 6581 requires a higher voltage than the 8580, and uses different capacitors.

If you accidentally put in a 6581 on a sidcard, it's unlikely that you'll damage it, but it probably just won't work.
