 1531 Record LED

Spektro just sent in a picture of his 1531 datasette package (see here: http://plus4world.powweb.com/hardware/390016). It has the record LED above the record button, and not on the right below the counter.

Interestingly, on this picture (http://plus4world.powweb.com/images/hardware/1531.jpg), the datasette and the box are mismatched... Anyway, I just though this might be an interesting topic. Maybe you guys can check your own datasettes and see where the LED is. One could be a later model?

 Re: 1531 Record LED

Haha one of my best kept secrets, as in I don't use them at all and keep well away.

Look at the number counter too, that's the biggest give away and always the first thing I look at. Personally I keep clear of these as they are older... and I have many of the later models which came with Plus/4's mostly so that's handy for spares. The insides between the two are also a little different and will not fit inside each other...

In the UK these were in fact 1st generation Commodore 16 datassette's, the ones with the small number counter window, white numbers and record light on the left. They were rolled out from C64 datasettes of the day that were using the very same one just a different colour.
The Plus/4 one was the bigger number counter and some C16's I bought around 2000 came with them, then again I have a couple of revision B C16's so that might be a clue when they were changed. I never bought them boxed, all my C16's were loose ones.

Not sure if this has ever been added to the site... I have one any way if you need a scan. Easier to link to one quickly to show you. Here is the Commodore 16 Starter Pack Brochure for the UK, on the front you can now see the small number counter and yeah the red light is over Commodore. wink

Your find the bigger window black number counter version with a lot of Plus/4 bundles, the UK Plus/4 box shows the early datasette like C16 but I'm sure 1000's of Plus/4's had the later, you also see the later released 64C with Plus/4 style 1531's just a different colour of course.

I have a 1531 with the white numbers too. That was my original one bought back in around '86 or '87. I've never seen another one of them since then.

 Re: 1531 Record LED

i also know about the two variations with small white counter and the big black ones.
I saw some auctions where some machines where sold with a white datasette and our small Din-Connector.
If there werent customized, so there could exist a third variation.

 Re: 1531 Record LED

I've a 1531 with the record LED above the record button and white numbers. But I've never used it with my C16, I use it with my C64 with the Commodore adapter. Best Datassette I've ever had.

 Re: 1531 Record LED

Yeah they are not as common for our systems.
Even the boxed ones I have which have Mk2's inside them show the original Mk1 in the picture on the outside. Yet they come with the correct picture on the manual.

As luck would have it I have both manuals having one my self. The manuals are identical inside with only the front cover image that was changed. Inside both show black and white photo's of the original Mk1, or Model 1 as seen on the right below. Notice also the little styling difference in the cassette holder/lid.

George,
You can put 1531's in side C64 1530's depending on model of course, the give away would be the buttons if that was the case. Ours are grey/gray where C64 & 64C use Brown, sometimes they can also look like black too but these are very dark brown.

 Re: 1531 Record LED

Just had a look and found 2 on ebay.de

Comes with our Plus/4 1531 box.
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Commodore-Datatsette-1531-Boxed-/201055063966?

Showing the C16/Plus4 mini-din
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Commodore-Datassette-1531-fur-C16-C116-plus-4-2-/201072108923?

As you say both have brown buttons just like the C64 ones so are the real thing.
Maybe Commodore Germany had these made as replacement units and put the 1531 adapter in the box so all machines could use it. C64 would of been more common as to why it's in the style of... In the UK we sometimes see 64's with our grey colour 1531's and maybe that was Commodore UK's way of doing replacements.

The odd one might of even been rewired if they needed a replacement and could not get an adapter back in the days before ebay came along... I'm sure some one out there did. I would of. happy

 Re: 1531 Record LED

I suppose, commodore supplied the 1531 with white cases, because they ran out of the black cases...pehaps at the end of their existence.

So there is a third variation. A nice one, as i may add.

 Re: 1531 Record LED

Interesting to see the white model for the first time as intended for the plus/4 happy

I got two different 1531's both black with grey keys. One with record led above the logo, the other with the led below the counter button just as pictured with the two manuals in the above picture.
