ASSEMBLER USING THE BUILT IN MONITOR. I
EVEN GOT A COUPLE OF UTIL'S PUBLISHED! I
THEN MOVED ON TO THE C64,I DID SOME COOL
DEMOS,ALL OF WHICH HAVE VANISHED. AND
EVEN A HACK OF "MORPHEUS" FOR A GROUP
CALLED "THE TARTAN ARMY",WHERE I WAS
CALLED "INDI",A HANDLE I STILL USE ON
OCCASIONS. MY HACKING CAREER DIDN'T LAST
LONG SINCE A COUPLE OF YEARS LATER I
STARTED WORK FOR DMA AS THEIR FIRST
EMPLOYEE BACK IN 1989;I WROTE
"BALLISTIX" AND "BLOOD MONEY" ON C64,AND
THEN I MOVE ON TO CONSOLES. I THEN WROTE
A PC ENGINE VERSION OF "SHADOW OF THE
BEAST" OF THE CDROM SYSTEM,I EVEN HACKED
THE DEV KIT AND REWROTE IT. THEN CAME
THE SNES AND "LEMMINGS 2". I ALSO DID A

THE 2 PLAYERS MODE HAS A VERY COOL SPLIT
SCREEN,WITH ONLY A COUPLE OF RASTERLINES
BETWEEN THE SPLIT! THIS WAS UNHEARD OF
ON THE SNES,AND I USED THE BANE OF C64
PROGRAMMERS,THE RIPPED SPRITE:BY SETTING
THE MSB OF THE SPRITE IT RIPS IT IN TWO
VERY QUICKLY. THE GUYS AT NINTENDO
INSISTED ON CHECKING THIS IN THEIR R+D
BEFORE WE WERE ALLOWED TO DO IT! HACKERS
UNITE THAT'S WHAT I SAY. AFTER THAT I
WENT INTO R+D MODE DOING ALL KINDS OF
STUFF,"GTA" BEING THE RESULT OF ONE
ATTEMPT. NOW IN MY WORK LIFE I DO HIGH
END 3D STUFF,WHICH IS ABOUT AS FAR FROM
THE +4 AND THE OLD SYSTEMS AS YOU CAN
GET!

- YOUR +4 EXPERIENCE:WHY?

MMMM... BEFORE I STARTED THE EMULATOR
NOT A LOT! I HAD WRITTEN A BAD BREAKOUT
GAME,AND DONE THE SMOOTH-SCROLLERS YOU
HAVE SEEN. AND THAT WAS ABOUT IT... I
LOOKED FOR AGES FOR AN ASSEMBLER FOR THE
+4 AND WHEN I FOUND ONE,I HATED IT! I
EVERYTHING USING THE BUILT IN MONITOR.
SEEMS INCREDIBLE TO ME NOW...SOME OF IT
EVEN WORKED FIRST TIME!

- WE JUST KNOW YOUR GREAT EMULATOR...BUT
WE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT FROM YOU.

WHEN I STARTED IN BACK IN 1996,I HAD
BEEN LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO PUT ON MY
WEB PAGE. I ALSO HAD BEEN LOOKING FOR A
MACHINE THAT HADN'T BEEN EMULATED THAT
WOULD BE SIMPLE AND QUICK TO GET UP AND
GOING. SINCE I USED TO USE A +4 I
THOUGHT IT WOULD BE EASY...SHOWS HOW
MUCH I KNEW! THE PROBLEM OF COURSE WAS
THAT I NEVER DID ANY REAL WORK ON A +4,
NOT LIKE MOST OF THE HACKERS. SURE
GETTING THE 6502 STUFF GOING WAS EASY
ENOUGH... I EVEN GOT THE ROM AND
CARTRAGE SYSTEM GOING WITH OUT MUCH
PROBLEMS...AFTER THAT A SIMPLE GAME,
"FINDER KEEPERS" AS IT HAPPENS,WAS
SIMPLE. THEN MY PROBLEMS STARTED:99% OF
+4 GAMES WERE CRACKED,AND HAS PROTECTORS
AND DEMOS ON THEM. AND THEN YOU FIND OUT
THAT 20% OF GAMES WERE WRITTEN BY
HACKERS,SO TO GET MOST GAMES WORKING YOU
HAVE TO GET VERY CLOSE TO THE MACHINE
ITSELF! IT'S ON PAR WITH THE C64,ALL THE
TRICKS WERE USED IN GAMES AS WELL AS
DEMOS. EVEN NOW SOME GAMES JUST DON'T
WORK 100% STILL,I'VE LEARNED LOTS ABOUT
THE +4 AND I CAN EVEN KNOCK UP A QUICK
EMULATOR IN A COUPLE OF DAYS NOW! EVEN
AFTER ALL THAT,YOU STILL FIND OUT YOU
DON'T KNOW IT ALL BY HALF. AFTER SOLDER
HAD SENT ME HIS STUNNING SID ADD ON,I
WAS AMAZED TO SEE MEMORY ADD-ONS,SAMPERS
AND EVENMORE. THERE'S ALWAYS SO MUCH TO
ADD AND SO LITTLE TINE THESE DAYS.

- PROJECTS FOR THE FUTURE?

I HAVE A HUGE LIST OF THINGS I'D LIKE TO
DO,FAMILY PERMITTING! ON THE EMULATOR
FRONT,I WANT TO SLOWLY MORE OVER TO THE
NEW WINDOWS VERSION SINCE IT USES DEV
STUDIO AND IS MUCH BETTER. I CAN ALSO DO
VERY SIMPLE PORTS FROM THIS TO OTHER
SYSTEMS. A MAC PORT HAS ALREADY BEEN
DONE AND SHOULD BE EASY TO UPDATE AS
THINGS ARE ADDED. I'VE EVEN PORTED IT TO
SEGA'S NEWEST CONSOLE:THE DREAMCAST! I'M
ALSO DETERMANED TO DO A VICE VERSION,
PROBABLY USING MY WINDOWS ONE AS A BASE,
SO THEY CAN GET AT LEAST A SIMPLE
VERSION THAT'LL RUNS MOST GAMES.
IN THE NEAR FUTURE I'M WRITING A NEW +4
SHOOT-EM-UP! WITH LUCA'S HELP IN
GRAPHICS AND SOUND I HOPE TO DO
SOMETHING THAT SHOWS IT'S STILL A COOL
WEE MACHINE. I ALSO WANT TO RELEASE A
FRAMEWORK FOR ANYONE TO USE,SO THEY CAN
WRITE GAMES QUICKLY. THE FRAMEWORK WILL
HAVE THE SMOOTH SPRITE ROUTINE FOUND IN
MY SHOOT-EM-UP AND USING MINUS4 AS A
DEVELOPMENT PLATFORM YOU CAN EVEN GET
SOURCE LEVEL DEBUGGING.
MY JAVA VERSION IS ALSO THE LAST LINE OF
DEFENCE FOR MACHINES WITHOUT A RUNABLE
VERSION. JAVA AND JIT COMPILING IS VERY
HOT STUFF. ON MY P2-233 IT CAN RUN THE
EMULATOR AT FULL SPEED,AND ON SAY AN
ACORN A4000 OR SOMETHING LIKE THIS,IT
MAY BE THE ONLY WAY TO RUN A +4 ON YOUR
MACHINE. A DISK SYSTEM ON A JAVA VERSION
MAY ALSO PROVE VERY COOL,SINCE IT COULD
USE A REMOTE WEB SERVER AS ITS DISK
DRIVE!

- FREE SPACE:SAY ANYTHING YOU WANT.

SOMETHING ELSE I THOUGHT OF DOING IS A
'VIRTUAL WEB MACHINE',A TOTALLY NEW
MACHINE RUNNING 6502 OR Z80,AND GIVE IT
SOME COOL HARDWARE. SAY LIKE AN AMIGA
COPPER LIST FOR COLOUR EFFECTS,SOME
HARDWARE SPRITES AND PERHAPS EVEN SOME
3D TEXTURE HARDWARE! IF I GAVE IT SOME
VRAM AND SOUND RAM,THEN YOU COULD DO
SOME REALLY NEAT STUFF FOR WEB LINKS.
SCROLLERS THAT YOU CLICK ON TO GO TO A
WEB ADDRESS,COOL SPRITES YOU CAN CLICK
ON,OR EVEN FULLY TEXTURED 3D OBJECTS
THAT ARE ALL CONTROLED BY 6502. 6502 IS
GREAT FOR SIMPLE CONTROL,AND WITH
INTERUPTS AND ALL THE NORMAL STUFF
RASTERS AND EVEN A COPPER YOU COULD DO
SOME REAL NEAT WEB PAGES!
I ALSO THINK IT'S GREAT THAT THESE
MACHINES ARE STILLL GOING,AND EVEN HAVE
GROWING SUPPORT! WITH ANY LUCK,WE'LL SEE
MORE GAMES,MORE DEMOS AND MORE EMULATORS
AND DEVELOPMENT USING THE +4...NOT JUST
THE +4,ALL OLD MACHINES. ONE THING I
HAVE FOUND OUT IS I KNOW FAR MORE ON HOW
TO WRITE FAST CODE THESE DAYS THAN I
DID THEN. IF THIS IS TRUE FOR MOST,THEN
THINK OF WHAT WE COULD DO NOW!
