IT WAS SUMMER '86 WHEN I SAW A BASIC PRG
IN A MAGAZINE FIRST. AS I REMEMBER THE
MAG WAS A POPULAR PAPER,IT WASN'T
RELATED TO COMPUTERS,BUT THEY PUBLISHED
SOME EXERCISES EVERY WEEK ONCE. I'VE
NEVER SEEN COMPUTERS BEFORE,BUT I WAS
EXCITED:WHY? DUNNO. IT WAS JUST A
FEELING I WON'T EVER EXPLAIN.
AS THE SCHOOL STARTED,I WAS IN RIGHT
MOMENT TO CHOOSE COMPUTERS. THE SCHOOL
WAS SUPPORTED WITH A HUNGARIAN COMPUTER:
HIS NAME WAS HOMELAB 3,IF YOU KNOW THE
TRS-80 OR SUCH OLD COMPUTERS YOU
KNOW WHAT A HOMELAB WAS FOR:BASIC
INTERPRETER,Z80 COMPATIBLE PROCESSOR,16K
RAM,MONOCHROME DISPLAY,INTERNAL SPEAKER
QUALITY SOUND AND AN USUAL TAPE RECORDER
TO STORE DATAS. WELL,NOTHING COULD HAVE
BEEN RUBBERED ME OUT FROM THE MACHINES.
I CAN'T REALLY PERFORM THE FEELINGS I
HAD WHEN THE SCHOOL GOT 2 +4 IN THE END
OF THAT YEAR. I REMEMBER,THE 1ST GAME
WE'VE BEEN SHOWN WAS"CUTHBERT IN THE
SPACE";THAT WAS THE 1ST COMPUTER GAME I
HAVE EVER SEEN. IT WAS AMAZING.
I GOT A DREAM:TO GET A COMMODORE AND TO
BECOME A PROGRAMMER,AS GOOD AS I COULD
BE. THE COMPUTER GAVE ME SO MUCH FREEDOM
AND INDEPENDENCE WHAT I NEVER FELT
BEFORE.
FIRST TIMES,I PLAYED GAMES AND WROTE
SMALL PROGRAMS IN BASIC. THAT TIME WE
HAVE NO TURBOS FOR TAPES,AND WE SHOULD
HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOME OF 7-8
MINUTES TO LOAD A 12K LONG C16 PROGRAM.
WE PLAYED TUTTIFRUTTI,SCRAMBLE,XARGON
WARS ETC...
LATER I START TO SWAP PROGRAMS WITH MY
FRIENDS. WHEN I STARTED MY STAGE AT HIGH
SCHOOL I HAD SOME OF 100 GAMES.
MY 1ST COMPUTER WAS A C16,I GOT IT IN
'88 SEPTEMBER,I STILL HAVE IT:IT GOT
SOME SCARES DURING THE YEARS BUT IT
WOULD STILL WORK IF I'F PUT A 8501
PROCESSOR INTO IT. AFTER ALMOST A YEAR I
GOT A 60K MEMORY EXPANSION AND BECAME
ABLE TO RUN ANY STUFF WRITTEN FOR +4.
OF COURSE I CONTINUED TO SWAP PROGRAMS:
THE COPYRIGHTS AND OTHER LEGAL STUFF
WEREN'T MUCH OF SENSE FOR US;ANYWAY,
CRACKING WAS AN ABSOLUTE LEGAL WAY FOR
EVERYONE WHO WAS INTERESTED IN GAMES.
THERE WASN'T SOFTWARE POLICE OR BSA OR
WHAT THE FUCK ON EARTH,SO EVERYBODY
COPIED PROGRAMS.
I CONTINUED MY BEHAVIOUR WITH
PROGRAMMING AND TAKING LESS PARTS IN THE
SCHOOL. I REMEMBER,I KNEW SOME THINGS
FROM ASM BECAUSE I HAD TO PATCH MY BONGO
COPY TO WORK FROM THE KEYBOARD,BUT THE
1ST PROGRAM I PERFORMED IN ASM WAS A
TURBOTAPE BASED ON AN OLD AND USELESS
ROUTINE,WHAT USED THE SAME FORMAT AS C64
TURBOS DID. I PICKED UP SOME ROUTINES
FROM IT AND MADE A SELFLOADER TYPE TURBO
AND COPIER MYSELF,WHICH WAS ALMOST A
HALF TIME FASTER THAN THE CURRENT
LOADERS. IT WAS DATED ON THE END OF '89,
I ONLY HAD A TAPE;BUT I WAS LUCKY AND I
GOT A FLOPPY:AN OC118N DRIVE. SO LATER I
WROTE A PROGRAM THAT COPIED FILES FROM
DISK TO TAPE WITH TURBO IN BOTH WAYS.
OF COURSE,I WASN'T ALONE. WHEN I STARTED
I DIDN'T KNOW WHO DOES SO FROM THAT
GROUP,BUT I BECAME ACQUAINTED WITH SUCH
PEOPLE SOON. THERE WHERE PEOPLE WITH
ALMOST THE SAME FEELINGS FOR COMPUTERS
AS ME,THEY BECAME MY BEST FRIENDS,AND
THIS FRIENDSHIP IT THE SAME AS MUCH AS
10 YEARS AGO. SOME OF THEM WALKED THEIR
OWN WAYS AND BECAME KNOW LATER IN OTHER
SUBJECTS AS CODING IN C64 CREWS.
I DON'T REALLY REMEMBER HOW DID I CODE
MY 1ST RASTER-ROUTINE;MAYBE MY FRIENDS
SHOW ME SOME WAYS TO DO IT IN A C64. I
HAD MUCH BOOKS,SO I HAD INFORMATIONS ON
TED REGISTERS,COMMANDS ETC... TEDMON WAS
ALWAYS MY BEST FRIEND. I STARTED TO USE
ASS-16 ANYWAY;THIS IS THAT SORT OF
ASSEMLERS THAT USED THE COMPUTER'S BASIC
EDITOR FOR EDITING THE LIST. LATER I USE
TURBOASSEMBLER.
SUMMER '91 I GOT A MUSIC FROM A FRIEND
THAT SOUNDED VERY INTERESTING;THAT WAS
STORMLORD'S MUSIC,CONVERTED FROM C64 IN
VERY AMAZING WAY. THE MAIN PART OF MY
WONDER WAS THAT +4 MUSICS WERE QUITE
UGLY IN OPPOSITION WITH A C64 OR SO;THE
TED COULDN'T BE REALLY EXPLAINED AS A
MUSIC GENIUS,IT PLAYS ONLY 2 SQUAREWAVES
IN A QUITE LIMITED FRQ-RANGE. BUT THIS
MUSIC PLAYED DIGIS BESIDE OF 3 VOICES
WHICH WERE QUITE SIMILAR TO THE ONES I
HEARD ON C64. IT WAS THE 1ST TIME I MET
A DIGITAL MUSIC-CONVERTER ROUTINE. THAT
ONE WAS DONE BY WIT;IT EMULATED A SID
CHIP WITH +4 PROCESSOR BY PLAYING MIXING
DIGITAL CHANNELS ON TED'S D/A OUTPUT.
ALL MY RESPECTS TO WIT FOR INVENTING IT.
THE WIT CONVERTER COULDN'T HAVE BEEN
LEFT ME IN REST,SO I DISASSEMBLED IT AND
STARTED TO EXPERIENCE. AFTER FEW WEEKS I
OPTIMIZED THE CODE VERY MUCH:IT BECAME 4
TIME FASTER. MY INVENTION WAS TO PUT THE
MIXING ROUTINE INTO ZEROPAGE AND MAKE IT
SELF-MODIFYING,SO THE COMMANDS BECAME
SHORTER AS IN BYTES AS IN CYCLES. LATER
I MADE A DEVELOPED VERSION WHICH
EMULATED THE SQUAREWAVE'S PULSE LEVELS.
BUT THAT TIME I BECAME MORE AND MORE
BETTER IN ASM. I WROTE MY 1ST INTROS AND
DREW MY 1ST LOGOS;THESE WERE SHARED WITH
FRIENDS. I KNEW MUCH PEOPLE BY THE
SWAPPING,EVEN FROM ALL PART OF THE
COUNTRY. I ALSO INVENTED MY 1ST CODE
PROTECTOR. ALSO,THE TCL NAME WAS
INVENTED. THIS MEANT"THE LAZY CRACKER".
IN '91 AUGUST I CONTACTED 2 PALS:FERENC
MERRYHART,ALIAS FREDDY/GOTU,AND PETER
NAGY,ALIAS BIT-IKLI. I SENT THEM A LIST
OF PRGS CONTAINING MY DIGIPLAYER.
FREDDY'S REACTION WAS QUITE BRIGHT;HE
INVITED ME TO THE GOTU,I ACCEPTED IT.
I STARTED IT WITH 2 PARTS INTO GOTU MEGA
1,WHICH WAS PLANNED FOR COMPUTER XMAS
'91;THAT WAS THE BIGGEST COMPYPARTY I'VE
BEEN,AND THE 1ST ALSO. IT'S A FEELING I
CAN'T REALLY DESCRIBE:TO BECOME
ACQUAINTED WITH THE WHOLE SCENE,THE GUYS
OF YOUR TEAM... WELL,I HOPE EVERYBODY TO
FEEL SO. MAYBE,THAT WAS THE TIME I WROTE
THE 1ST SCROLLING ROUTINE THAT USED A
SPLITTED RASTER AS PIXELS OF THE CHARS.
NEXT YEAR,MY C16 DIED ONCE;THIS COSTED
ME A NEW 8501 PROCESSOR AND 2 41464 DRAM
CHIPS TO FIX...AND A LOT OF TIME. I
INVENTED MY 2ND CODE PROTECTOR:TLC'S
DEFENDER V2.0 WHICH HAD THE BEST
ENCODING LOGIC BUT SOME STUPID BUGS AS
WELL;IT SYNCHRONISED ITSELF TO THE
SCREEN AND TO THE COUNTERS AND USED THEM
FOR CODING. I NEVER USED IT EXCEPT IN
ONE PROGRAM. I ASSUMED THAT I LEARNT
CODING IN OTHER PEOPLE'S WORK;SO WE ALL
MUST AVOID CODE PROTECTIONS IF WE EXPECT
PEOPLE TO LEARN TO CODE. I FORGOT THAT
PROTECTION FOREVER.
THEN,TIME FLIED AWAY. THAT WAS THE YEAR
I TOOK MY FINAL EXAMS;AND TIME TO
RELEASE MY "FIRST DEMO/TLC". IT HAD SOME
EFFECTS THAT MADE AMAZED EVEN THE BEST
CODERS;I GUESS,THE BESTS WON'T HAVE BEEN
EVEN THOUGHT THAT A NEWCOMER WILL CODE
RASTEREFFECT UNDER A DIGITAL MUSIC 1ST.
THE DEMO CONTAINED DIGITAL MUSIC ONLY,
ONE OF THESE WITH 4TH DIGITAL CHN,
RASTERS,SPRITES ETC. I WAS REALLY PROUD
OF IT,ALTHOUGH I SHOULD HAVE USED SOME
MORE DESIGN. FEW DAYS LATER,I DECIDED TO
LEAVE GOTU AND START SOMETHING NEW.
BIT-IKLI WAS WITH ME AND HE INVENTED THE
NAME'CORONERS'. SOME WEEK LATER,CBS
JOINED. HE WAS ONE OF THAT GUYS I KNEW
FROM THE VERY FIRST TIMES.
THAT JUNE MY FLOPPY GAVE IT UP. FOREVER.
AND I HAD NO MONEY. I ALSO FAILED MY
ENTRANCE EXAMS. BUT I HAD TIME;SOME
MONTHS LATER I RELEASED FLI EDITOR V1.0.
IT WAS QUITE USELESS IF THE GRAPHICIAN
WAS NOT KNOWN IN THINGS WITH THAT +4 FLI
THING.
MEANWHILE,WE FOUND AN OTHER GUY TO JOIN.
HE WAS COYOTE AND HE WORKED ON C64 AS
GRAPHICIAN;HE'S STILL ONE OF THE BEST
GRAPHICIANS I'VE EVER KNEW,I'M REALLY
PROUD TO KNOW THAT WE WORKED TOGETER.
THAT YEAR I DEVELOPED MY MUSIC CONVERTED
ROUTINES;FIRST I GOT SOME ONCE THAT
OTHER PEOPLE WROTE AND I OPTIMIZED,THEN
I WROTE A FULL SELFMADE ONE WITH OWN
ADSR AND MIXING ROUTINES. ONE OF THEM
PERFORMED EVEN THE SYNCHRONIZING AND THE
RING MODULATION EFFECTS. THESE THINGS
REALLY AFFECTED THE MIXING SPEED BUT
THEY VOICED WELL. THESE ROUTINES ARE THE
FASTEST ANYWAY. ALL PEOPLE I KNOW NOW IS
STILL USING MY ROUTINES. IN OTHER WORDS,
I WAS KNOW OF MY MUSIC CONVERTERS.
LATER,I STUDIED PROGRAMMING FOR A YEAR.
IT WAS THE BEST PLACE I'VE EVER BEEN.
BUT IT REALLY SCREWED UP MY +4 THINGS.
AND I HAD NO FDD. I HAD ALMOST NO POWER
AND TIME SO I BECAME INACTIVE,AND IT
REALLY AFFECTED THE OVERALL PERFORMANCE
OF CORONERS. I'M VERY SAD WHEN THINKING
OF THE POSSIBILITIES,OUR POSSIBLE
PERFORMANCE AND THAT QUITE NOTHING WE
DID...AND I MUST SAY I HAD A BIG PART OF
THIS INACTIVITY. SOMETIMES I CAN'T
REALLY FORGIVE MYSELF.
NEXT RELEASE WAS SUPER PIPELINE,I
CONVERTED IT FROM C64. MY DIPLOMAWORK
WAS ALSO IN TOUCH WITH COMMODORE;IT WAS
A VGA-COMMODORE GRAPHIC CONVERTER.
MY LAST PROGRAM IS LEONARDO,A CONVERTION
DATED '93 NOVEMBER. NOW CORONERS IS
ASLEEP. OR IT DOESN'T LIVE AT ALL:
BIT-IKLI IS MY MATE IN THE COLLEGE,CBS
WORKS AT HUNGARIAN RAIL,COYOTE IS
WORKING IN A C64 GROUP.

- WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW ON +4,C64,PC?

I'LL HAVE TO MAKE TIME TO EXPAND A VIC20
AND START SOME EXPERIENCE WITH IT.
I WORK ON A DISCO-LASER CONTROLLER STUFF
FOR THE C64:A 3D ANIMATOR AND PLAYER,
WHICH USES RATHER ALL PARTS OF C64.
MAYBE,I SHOULD TRY TO CONVERT SOMETHING
WITH THE METHOD I NEVER USED:I MADE A
SMALL DEVELOPER SYSTEM CONTAINING A PC
CROSS ASSEMBLER AND A LINKER/TRANSMITTER
I WROTE IN TURBO PASCAL. THE METHOD IS
TO TRANSFER THE C64 PROGRAM TO THE
PC AND MODIFYING IT IN SOURCE-LEVEL IT
WOULD BE MUCH EASIER TO DO THAN WORKING
WITH TEDMON. BUT I HAD NO TIME...

EH,NOT REALLY:I MET LARRY SOMETIMES BUT
HE'S CONCENTRATING ON C64 DEMOS AND PC.
AND I MET HEHL/TBS VIA EMAIL.

THERE'S NOT MUCH ACTIVITY I SEE. THESE
DAYS KIDS START THEIR ACQUAINTANCES WITH
COMPUTERS ON DADDY'S PENTIUM. I CAN'T
REALLY BELIEVE IN TOO MUCH INTEREST IN
8-BIT COMPUTERS IN THE FUTURE,AND A
FEELING WILL BE LOST FOREVER. I'D RATHER
BELIEVE IN THE WILD-SCENE,WHERE THE
CONFIGURATION OF YOUR DEMO DEPENDS ON
YOU;YOU CAN WRITE A DEMO EVEN FOR A
ZX81. I REALLY HOPE THAT PEOPLE DON'T
GET STUPID AND THE NEW GENERATIONS WILL
BREAK THESE CHAINS THAT BILLY BABY AND
HIS FAMILIARS GAVE TO THIS RACE.
I DON'T HAVE MUCH ILLUSIONS ABOUT THE
CURRENT +4 SCENE ANYWAY. BUT I'M VERY
EXCITED ABOUT THE STILL ACTIVE PEOPLE.

I HAVE A DREAM:TO IRC FROM MY +4. SO
FIRST I'D TALK WITH DHE DEVELOPER OF
DECDERM OR NOVATERM TO HELP ME IN
CONVERTING,THEN I'D MAKE A +4 VERSION.
THE +4 WOULD BE EVEN BETTER TO USE AS A
TERMINAL AS IT HAS A BUILT IN 6551 ACIA
AND IT CAN COMMUNICATE UP TO 19200 BAUD
WHILE C64'S NEED A CARTRIDGE.
THE OTHER:TO MAKE A HDD CONTROLLER FOR
THE CBM.
AT LAST,I'LL MAKE A CD COLLECTION OF ALL
EXISTING +4 PROGRAMS TO PREVENT THEM
FROM THE LOSS. I'D WRITE A V2.0 FLI
EDITOR WHICH WOULD HANDLE ALL POSSIBLE
FLI MODES. AND IT WOULD BE COOL TO WRITE
A DEMO ON +4,BUT NOW I'VE TO MANAGE WITH
VIC20. HAVE I SAID,COYOTE'S 1ST COMPUTER
WAS A VIC20?
