Hmmmm, the $fd30, $ff08 things you wrote about in some previous mails are common knowledge, so you are definitely not alone... :)

Checking one of the programs I would say that this must be true.... 
(This was the demo one...) It has two routine's one was only catching the y-position, while the other was getting the X position by turning on and off each square... And it was watching bit 6 of 
$ff0d, which has nothing to do with the joystick... 
 
I think it works similar to the lightpen I have... Catching y position is easy, and when it has it, this cleared the screen to black, and a white stripe started to grow from the left of the screen in that line. 
When he received the sygnal from the lightpen again it knew the x-position.... It was very slow to use, but it worked...
