What doesn't work about the 1581? I see Jim Hehl mention in text on ceep4a disks that he uses it.
I use the 1571 on Plus/4 all the time, it works well even in 1571 mode, although you only get the extra side, not the burst or fast serial loads and saves.
It's nice to have 1328 blocks instead of 664, you could probably even use it as two single sides at the same time, 8,0 and 8,1.

Also CMD which can abe found at www.cmdweb.com makes the FD2000, a hd 3.5" disk drive which will work with the Plus/4. They also inform me their hard drives work with the Plussy.
