What's your config? (Proci, operating system etc...)
Do you have a 1541-II ? If yes, note, that only one of the connector works with X1541, at least with mine. It's the connector which is called Interface, it's the one which is closer to the Power connector. Also disconnect the Plus4 from the 1541, even if it is turned off.
Also give a try with VC1541, and if that works then the cable is ok.
Boot clean dos, and also on some configs turning the caches off helped,
(internal, external in the CMOS setup).
