 Plus4 found with network capabilities?!

Hi plussiers!

Maybe something new... I have found a Plus4 with network ROM I think. The startup screen says:

COMMODORE BASIC V4.0 *** TC NET ***

Any info?

Have you looked at the ROMs inside the machine, anything written on them?

Re: Plus4 found with network capabilities?!

That reminds me... In elementary school 7th grade, back in Hungary at one time I went on a competition. The machines were Plus/4, and they were in a network! The teacher showed us that he could BROADCAST (that may have been the actual basic command) messages to all clients, and the text showed up on the client Plus/4 at the bottom in inverse. That's all I remember though unfortunately.

Some new info:

This machine came from an elementary school of my birthplace Gyula, Hungary. I have heard that there was an education network with plus4 computers. I will try to know more.

"TC-NET" was mentioned in this page:

Looking at ROM chips:

The U24 kernal and U25 Function low is replaced. U25 has a label "U25 SLAVE", maybe this is a slave machine in the network.

Correction:

I have other machine and only one chip is replaced in it: U25. In my previous post I mentioned U24, i think this chip contains the hungarian character ROM.

Hm, really interesting! Unfortunately there must be a server machine then, I guess the client would not be able to operate without the server. (I think it might be some kind of star networking.)

Re: Plus4 found with network capabilities?!

Yeah, network games would be awesome, but in reality we couln't really play them at parties, since we would need all "network capable" plussies. However, for two machines, connected by a serial cable, that would be fast enough, so doable. Then we could ask Gaia to add emulation for this: two people would be connected over the internet, and the connection would be emulated as the serial cable... happy

Plus4 has roughly the same RS232 properties than C=64, has'nt? And if exist c=64 networking hardwares and softwares they could be usable for Plus4 or not?

No, the Plus4 has a better and faster RS232, because it is hardware wired and not software emulated as it is on C64!

Also, many C64 networking hardware packages use the cartridge port, which is physically and memory-wise different than on the Plus/4.
