Apparently, it doesn't fit into a C16, being a BASIC program which needs space for the variable beyond $4000. Actually, it doesn't load if C16 is set on any emulator, although C16 was reported on both the known commercial versions.
Can somebody confirm this?

Huh, this is an odd one. To be even more precise, it does fully and successfully load on C16, but won't run.
What's super odd to me though is the memory contents from $3400, which appear to contain this: " (c) 1985 tynesoft computer software by d.reynolds hi-score: press space"
That cannot be on an officially released Novotrade cassette... o_O Can it?
The BASIC program actually ends around $3189. If saved correctly, it does run on C16 just fine. My guess is; the TAP file we have is a home-made recording, not the official release.
BTW, where the heck is "Darmland"?

@Csabo yes, your reconstruction of the events flows the right way. I compared what we have, with a different .PRG which has been saved to $4000 again, and the file shows a different content after $3189.
Ok, gonna tag that TAP file as 'unofficial' or 'homemade', and change the PRG file with a clean one. Oh btw, it's an unexpectedly super fun game derived from the Nibbler's design! But beware! If you're pointing to the hiscore for the HoF, be fast to take a photo or a screenshot after the last stage (counted on the left of the screen), because the game immediately turns back to the input selection!

Lacus swings his Hammer of Truth hard, smashing through all the guesswork The "official" TAP is now archived, the game runs on C16 just fine! New high-res scan and cassette photo also added.
Thanks for these

All done! Curiosity: the game saves a further $FF after the usual three zeroes in BASIC. Thanks Csabo and Lacus.
