 Issues with joystick

Hello,

I’ve been wanting a Plus/4 for years but have never been able to justify it to myself. My parents bought us one around Christmas 1985, and I spent a lot of time on it until my dad bought us a PC in 1991. Then he gave the Plus/4 and the 100+ games I’d bought for it away to another family member. I was gutted because he didn’t ask if it was okay; he just assumed.

Anyway, my wife bought me one for Christmas, along with a few games. While it generally seems to work well, playing a game like Icicle Works has issues. You can move around okay, but as soon as you press the joystick button with a direction, it doesn’t work. However, in a game like Airwolf, it seems to work fine—movement is good, and the joystick button works as expected. Treasure Island has the same issue as Icicle Works, though. You can move around okay, but you can’t throw a sword unless you use the keyboard.

I found a Speedking joystick in a retro shop in York (UK) last weekend and plugged that in and have the same problems, so it doesn't appear to be the joystick itself. Anyone got any suggestions as to what the issue could be? I haven't been brave enough to open up and look around yet, though it's definitely been opened before.

 Re: Issues with joystick

I wonder if the Joystick has an Auto-Fire (repeat) switch.
so when you are holding down the fire button, it is sending on,off.

to dig in icicle works you need to hold down the button then move.
so the command is failing?

as you tried two joysticks.
it maybe a loose connection /dry solder on the joystick port.

@Mashrok: First try this test program to rule out a possible TED error: HID-Test

@Mashrok: the behaviour with Icicle Works is correct and intentional: the game allows you to collect presents or dig snow in an adjacent space without moving; you hold the fire button down to do so.
