With the emulators, it can be done, and it's very easy. The function you are looking for is called "Save Snapshot" in both emulators you mentioned, and they are available from the menu. When you save a snapshot, it contains the machine's state at that moment, so you can load it back later. Do it before doing something risky. Also works great with action games.
