A simple STA $FF3F and everything will go, no need to disable IRQs 
Btw, if you LDA/STA a value into $FF07, you force the PAL/NTSC settings, not preserving the original one; that code is needed to keep the bit6 with you. My fault, I didn't read the LDA/ORA/STA, you did it that good ;)
