Anyone know anything about the C16/+4 1802 monitor?

Picked one up for cheap and it died in about 3 hours... Does anyone know about it's problems or want to help me diagnose the problems with mine?

Once it heats up the screen splays into horizontal bars but recently it just won't display a picture at all other than a white flash.

Or... is anyone selling one near Virginia? grin

Gonna be honest ... the 1802 isn't worth repairing unless you specifically want an 1802. The 2002 is a more reliable monitor, and also handles the C128's VDC mode (should you have, or ever want to obtain, a 128).

If you're simply looking for a screen (not specifically the Commodore brand), pick up an LCD television with red-white-yellow RCA jacks.

@George - I don't think the 1801 was sold in North America (NTSC-land). Bo Zimmerman's unit is PAL.

North America had the CM-141. The largest visible difference is the size and location of the Volume and Brightness knobs. wink

Re: Anyone know anything about the C16/+4 1802 monitor?

@JamesC : Of course you are right. The 1801 is a Pal Monitor. Thanks for pointing out. After seeing the pic of the CM141 again, there are more differences. The 1801 has a transparent cover in front of the screen, all the knobs ar hidden behind a Cover in front of the Monitor (Missing at cm141), there is only a big square Power button and the Power light is more right. Two Different Monitors, the only 2 with the 264 Rainbow batches i know. The 1801 is a really cool looking Monitor and the heavy, quality of buildung is a much better than the 1802 (there are different versions) i had once. To find one it took about a year, but i paid only 2 Euros for it.

Well, this is the first time I've heard about the 2002 type monitor.

Actually 2€ is a pretty good price for such a rarity!

I got my monitor as a gift in a package (Philips 8833), but it just does not work happy
(Maybe I will repair it in the far future, if the error is just something trivial, till that time I use my normal TV via CVBS to Scart adapter. Not perfect, but works).

Re: Anyone know anything about the C16/+4 1802 monitor?MM

Yes i was lucky..patience pays off sometimes..

There is a nice story:
I had the idea to realize a complete 264 system with matching monitor, floppy, printer and joystick. So first i tried to buy a cm141 (I didnt know anything about the 1801, actually its named 180I) from the US for 30$. But the vendor assured me, it wouldnt survive the transport. Then i found by accident the PAL, mono sound- 180I, which is much cooler in my opiniion, so i tried to find on for a reasonable price. I used it as TV-monitor for a while.

There is a Hungarian guy who collects information about Commodore branded monitors. You can check his page at https://gona.mactar.hu/Commodore/monitor/Commodore_monitors_by_model_number.html.
He lists these models matching the 264 series color scheme:
1201 (PAL M?)
1703 (NTSC)
1801 (PAL)
1802 (NTSC)
CM-141 (NTSC)

Re: Anyone know anything about the C16/+4 1802 monitor?

1201 was only sold in Australia/New Zealand. It's also 80 col monochrome. While it could be used with a Plus/4, it's not the best choice. wink

The 1703, the black 1802s, and the CM-141 are all the same; whatever differences there are (other than case colour) are so small that I would have called all three a CM-141. And to be honest, I'm not sure that the two black 1802s are really different colours -- the slight difference in the photos could be attributed to lighting and/or camera sensitivity.

The light brown "tall" 1802 was referred to as the 1802C in the US. There is a note to this effect if you scroll down that column.

I wish I knew how to repair the darn thing. I've gotten no help because it's "not worth saving" by a ton of folks. I really like the look the 1802 monitor with the over sized knobs and plastic cover.

Re: Anyone know anything about the C16/+4 1802 monitor?

You're also not getting much help because it's a 30 year old tube-type (CRT) monitor.

If you stick a screwdriver into a 110V outlet, you'll feel a tingle.
If you stick a screwdriver into a 220V outlet, it'll knock you on your backside.

Taking the cover off a CRT monitor or television could expose you to 12,000-15,000 volts. One small slip of the hand, not even holding a screwdriver, and there won't BE a Papa_Bear.

Seriously. Take it to an old-school television repair shop, or replace it.

Re: Anyone know anything about the C16/+4 1802 monitor?

OK, UPDATE:
do not repair at home any stuff that is stronger by shaking hands than you, like has 110V or 15KV inside :-)

Sorry for my previous suggestions, as anyone else, I started from myself to drew conclusions. But the fact is, that my profession from secondary school is a power electronics technician.
As I know the possible risks, seems I took them less seriously (because I know by heart, what to NOT touch, and what toolt to be used to be safe).
Still, I had two electric shocks from 230V in my life. (fortunately I was lucky and nothing serious)

Because this knowledge is NOT a basic knowledge, please bring such stuff to an expert / service center.
Your life worth more than those pennies.

UPDATE ON
I remember now why I do not use the Philips monitor. It probably works but I cannot use it.
I have the Philips CM8833 Mark-II. The and it it very close to the Commodore 1804S-P2.

This version does not have SCART socket but has TTL or Analog RGB input and CVBS only.
(good for CGA, Amiga and maybe Spectrum +3 and Amstrad, ATARI VXBE card, but not so good for Commodore 8 bits as only CVBS is avaialble with color wash)

As I have a C= Video to SCART adapter, and had no other converter at home to get the CVBS fromthe scart, I could not load a CVBS signal from the Commodore.
So still not in use, as I have nothing to contact with.
After I cleaned up the mess here (sell the old toys we have) had some space to install it and order a proper cable for it.

Re: Anyone know anything about the C16/+4 1802 monitor?

My personal preference, in order: 2002/1902 (C128 styling), 1802/1703/CM-141 (Plus/4 styling), 1702/1701 ("original" or "breadbox" C64 styling), 1802C ("slim" 64C styling).

If you venture outside the Commodore brand, all you really need are plain ol' RCA plug inputs, one for video and one for audio. But if you find one that has Chroma and Luminance on RCA inputs, this will give you a sharper picture. You don't need stereo sound, you don't need S-Video input, you don't need a remote control -- though these might be nice if you want to use the monitor for other things too, like a DVD or VHS player.
