Re: c64/vic20 to c16 Datasette adapter

1 million English pounds and you can have both my 1531 Adapters as well as my coping adapter that plug's in to any unwanted C64 that you might have. wink

1531 Adapters do show up on ebay a fair bit and are not as hard to get hold of as you might think. Just have to have a little patience and keep looking regularly.

There is one right now in Germany, depending where you are you might need to ask for posting prices.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Commodore-16-116-plus4-Datasette-1531-plus-Adapter-fur-C64-C128-neuwertig-/271397618069

When searching also search for C64, Commodore 64 , 64 Datasette ect, as they are normally associated with C64 owners who forget they were used on C16/Plus4 when they list them. Even search TAPE DECK and even the miss-spelling of Datasette such as Datasete.
The obvious does not always work when searching for something, remember that.

Hope you find one soon.

Anything interesting from the C16 Plus4 tape collection that you plan to back up? happy

Re: c64/vic20 to c16 Datasette adapter

Hey thanks 4 replying guys happy

Microsprout from Ebay UK said you guys were friendly & helpful !

The c16 is quite rare in Australia with the plus4 & c116 probably considered ultra-rare.

It took me a very long time & lots of cash to fix the c16; new TED chips from Germany, new power supply, fuses etc

I have never come across a c116 in Australia or ebay.

MIK the link you sent is for the 1531 to be used on the vic20 & 64, I already got it. I'm after the other opposite adapter. Wanna plug two c64 c2n datasettes into special device, then into this mentioned adapter. I hope its all possible. Nothing rare or special to backup; just classics 1 & 2 collections & space games like vox, zapem, goldrush etc

I will check out RobertB's links to make sure it is the correct one!!

Thanks again !!!!

Re: c64/vic20 to c16 Datasette adapter

Right you are and that's why you've only ever seen one! I've not come across one of those before.

If you become stuck...
You could make one if you know what your doing. You would need to cut the end of some broken 1531 if you have a spare and then maybe wire that to one of these?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Commodore-64-128-EDAC-307-012-500-202-Cassette-Datasette-Connector-/131098512664.
You could map out the wires from the 1531 adapter as it's just a reversed version.

Are Commodore 64's easy to get hold of in Australia being more common? That would also do it. The C64 option would be cheaper as machines to replace for such a task when C16's can be a bit more valuable overall if you get my meaning. wink

Re: c64/vic20 to c16 Datasette adapter

Thanks 4 the link Mik happy

Have saved it in watchlist

MMSZ I am not the most technically minded person, but the tricky part would be also obtaining a mini-din port to plug back of the c16 !

I guess they would somehow have to be soldered-wired together.

Anyone know how to accomplish all this? Don't think there would be site on internet somewhere with all the technical details.

BTW there used to be a datasette repair kit sold in the UK many years ago, if your lucky maybe you could find one on ebay. I think these items should be saved rather than sold off for spare parts

Guess MIK is right by implying that anything c16 is worth its wait in GOLD. c64's are pretty common in OZ so will strip for parts as last resort !

Not all of the classic cassette to cassette tape players work mind as I remember that being an issues with some of my friends wanting the odd game like Strip Poker lol.
We had an Hitachi 3D Super Woofer and that didn't work. I'm sure some where it records Mono as Stereo though, something along those lines. While others were better for it, the ones some friends had. happy

Great to see you all come together for a great cause; c16/plus4 world revival !
Aus, UK, USA, Hungary !!! What no German Geniuses ???

Thanks Rob, I will email charles shortly !!

Guys i remember trying that double tape dubbing with many cbm cassettes but it only ever worked with a few programmes. I think they may have had some early form of copy protection. Does anyone remember the strange computer data noises that would drive you insane? Anyhow try using the double adapter device i use with 2 decks, works just about every time. Just load normally with one deck & press record on the other.
I have been told by a UK product producer that to reproduce a generic datasette adapter is in fact quite a difficult task. Perhaps one day i will do it with the help of an advanced 3d printer. Think about it guys, anyone who could reproduce all c16/p4 hardware stands to make a killing on ebay. Whoops there goes my secret to making millions...perhaps a joint venture with you Mik? Whadda yo say mate :}

Re: c64/vic20 to c16 Datasette adapter

Man... someone make a batch of new 64k memory cartridges for Commodore 16's and I'm there on the BUY IT YESTERDAY button!!

Although not as busy as some forums out there we have loads of people passing by and many still active from Germany, the rest of Europe all the way down to the tip of Italy, Canada to Russia, Japan and Brazil. Loads of users and coders from all over the world. happy

Yeah, I have not backed up many of my games, more the ultra rare and hard to replace games on C16/Plus4, such as Pin Point, Phantom & Jet Set Willy 32k version, some others... Stuff like Tom Thumb, Winter & Summer Events I have more than one copy of so that saved me making backups of them. wink
On C64 I also did backups of Turrican 1 & 2, Last Ninja Remix & Last Ninja 3 as they would cost to much to replace now days. In all my years I have lost 2 tapes that were chewed, one was Terra Nova C16/Plus4 trying so hard to make a .tap image for emulation and it was having none of it lol, and the other was Rick Dangerous on C64. Really painful when that happens but more to do with the datassette has seen better days so had stop using them as you would. Rick Dangerous is common as muck, Terra Nova, took about 2 years for one to show up on the bay of E. Finally have another, need to back it up at some point!!!!
But yeah what I was going to say, those that I have copied are like perfect mirrors of the original using the datassette way to do it. Just like the real thing or as good as you could hope for!

Here is a picture of it. I never made it, came with a job lot of C64 stuff back in the 1990's and though it never came with any copied tapes I laughed as I knew what it was. grin
Never came with the 1531 adapters, I added them as I use 1531's mostly.

Half of message now lost

Some smart guy from Holland is producing devices for the spectrum computers & looks like making BIG BUCKS . Im sure much more would be possible in future with a high-tech 3d Printer.
Hoping to one day reproduce my old vintage computers & hardware and sell them as new for few hundred dollars boxed...will need contacts & investments. Would only need a large customer base to sell high volumes.
Regarding games....the ninja series I remember was almost impossible to complete without cheats.
I know MIk you would prefer to replace lost & rare games with originals.... but there is specific sd2iec device for the c16/p4 where you can load most games through it. I have the vic20/64/128 version, but the only trouble is it doesn't load up most 2 or 3 disk game images.
Hope this all helps & will get back in few days. Cheers Max

Sorry to hear your messages have been effected Retro76. Never known this to happen to anyone before so very unlucky.

Maybe you could send a msg to Csabo with some basic details like forum user name, so he can make you a member and then give you a password ect... Once logged in you won't have to type your name when posting, your be able to cast your votes on stuff you like.

I keep thinking about getting a sd2iec as it would make things so much easier to get stuff over to the real machine sooner than later. The reason I keep stalling is because I have the means to copy stuff directly to a real 1541 via PC and do it that way so some classics and even updated and fixed versions I have on floppy any way. happy
Unlike the C64 scene you might be pleased to know that where possible commercial games in downloadable form for C16/Plus4 such as .PRG's are as pure to the original tape version as can be. We have some special ones tho such as Legionnaire where it also includes the tape loading screen as well as the game 100% as it should be seen un-changed! So we have none of this "Big shout to the crew in 92, we crackeded this game in 2 days, music by the boss, would you like infinity lives?" which is something I so hate with Commodore 64 stuff, this alone makes my real C64 collection priceless!
And when something is worth updating, fixing once the original has been sorted games such Saboteur C16 you see in the news have a new lease of life by adding a trainer, joystick support and a cool intro which does not harm the original because no matter what the original is still there either way. More respectful that way.
But yeah a bunch of commercial games on sd2iec or floppy are just as good as the real thing when it comes to C16/Plus4. I like reminissing, having something to hold, read the instructions yet again in case I missed something, enjoy the artwork and all as it once was more than anything. Mind you if people didn't collect tapes then half of the .tap achieve that's been made would not be here so it's all good. The real thing when chilled out in front of the TV, emulation as in YAPE for PC an Notebook and in the background you have Plus/4 World open. Best of both worlds. happy

Greetings Csabo (which country?), Yassu George & Si senor Kopsec,

I will take MIKs advice & ask you to help me join up as registered user happy
Charles is an interfacing specialist (testing the spam filter) & have just asked him if he as any 64k memory cards. He said hes got the adapters in his possession but if he doesn't get back to me within a week I will let you know kopsec as I am already happy with the price. Will you get new parts from the internet or break them off old computer parts?
BTW just been invited to join AMIBAY but know nothing about it. Have been told it is good for multiple vintage computer owners.
Yeah the c64 cracked scrolling images can be annoying but are just as bad or worse on other computers such as amigas & Atari STS. I once read a message that was 5 minutes long & slammed all the ''lamer'' groups & then funnily enough did not load-up the popular game. How frustrating
I guess Mik is using xe/xm1541 style software? Have heard about yape on another forum topic but not Legionnaire. Will have to check it all out! With sd2iec there is no guarantee of 100% success with all programs. I can forsee trouble with vic20 & c16/p4 in areas of expanded/unexpanded titles being used with sd2iec. Must work out which titles require 4k,16;32,64 etc
The BAD NEWS: Current price for the most advanced 3d model printer $1 million (US), cheapest for small plastic devices $1000. BTW Nothing beats a large original cassete package with all the manuals & artwork happy Plus4 Heaven............

Re: c64/vic20 to c16 Datasette adapter

.prg's are the most basic fuel you can give to a sd2iec meaning most things will run off one with it's eyes closed for C16/Plus4. sd2iec was made for us for the most part even if it was not intended so. Some demo's that were designed to run on a 1551 disk drive my not but overall 98% if not 99% of stuff should work.
All .prg's are simple memory dumps, and they load back in to memory where they once were so nothing demanding really.

I use the tried and tested Star Commander to talk to the 1541 via PC on a crusty old Pentium II under dos lol.

Indeed a lack of memory on a C16 could be a problem. Use Yape and set it to a C16 or to have 16k of memory and check each program before you copy to SD. happy

Re: c64/vic20 to c16 Datasette adapter

Yape is all self contained so just a simple un-zip and your ready to roll.
any .tap files you download are loaded under the TAPE menu, everything else under FILE as like all apps ect... I think by default the sound will be off and the menu's for that are on the left side. In basic you can type:

10 VOL 8
20 SOUND1,596,100
RUN

and that will play some sound as a test for you to mess with.

Any problems with YAPE or your not sure, ask. happy

as for TED's & CPU's I recall someone or some guy was talking about using lower voltage handling, and or run much cooler versions of these chips. They have the means to burn new ones, would love to get hold of a set, a couple 1 for C16 & 1 for Plus/4. I see this a while ago here but have long forgot who he or they were.

BTW,
I was having a word with Csabo, he said once you reach 10 posts your see a registration for joining. Just keep to the same name until then, just in case. wink

Hey boys !
MIK you are no doubt the Forum King & also give out great technical advice i see happy
I must say i am porbably the 'off topic' master in case you guys havent noiced. My mind jumps from one thing to another. The most common problems according to internet to plague the c16/p4 are the two chips that you mention. We must somehow unite & find a regular producer of these products to ensure continued worldwide revival happy
AMIBAY is actually quite complicated when compared to this site, but they do provide opportunities to buy & sell various hardware. Two of my PCs failed when i tried to install YAPE, but finally worked on another computer (HATE PC's 'Personal Craps', can i say that ?) Keyboard failed even usb, ps2 mouse failes & another failed to boot hard drive (win7)...man if i can get my hands on that Gates Fella...LOL Even when i typed MIks codes i couldnt get any sound...only to realise that this piece of shite mini-tower has no buil-in speaker Bloody takes hours & days just to run any old pc....ill stik to vintage computers any day thanks. BTW played the claasics today; petals of doom score 1480 plant3, Xargon Wars L2 score 58 Friggin hard (trainers please), Texas Ted (silly) & Dave (hard also, too fast & sluggish); Just realised that 16/p4 games are even harder than their 8-bit cousins....Cheer fellas....

Re: c64/vic20 to c16 Datasette adapter

I used to run Yape on a P2 333mhz (Win98) when it first came out fine. It also runs faultlessly on my crusty old Pentium4 2.4Ghz of 10 years old+++ (WinXP) which I'm using right now and now days it runs great on my Acer Note Book. Not sure what's going on your end for strange stuff like that to happen tho.

Not sure where you got hold of it but here is the official homepage for Yape.
http://yape.homeserver.hu/

Maybe there is some lack of resources on your PC, sound or graphics drives, even the version of Direct X?? I don't have a clue either.

Yes some of the old games can be testing. Sometimes that was the only way to make a 12k game last longer I'm sure. Xargon Wars is an evil one to begin with. If your after a neat little space shooter then try Myriad, Press Space Bar to use your Shields.

Forum King... nah just friendly, helpful where possible. Last thing I want is that title. You can have it if you post enough from now till the end of the year though!

Win7 USB keyboard failure is a known, unsolved issue, on my C2D based faster PC I have to use the virtual keyboard, no PS/2 socket any more... Duh.
Complete reinstall, you know what happy

I personally prefer Plus4Emu. It has great emulation level (though recently YAPE seems advanced a lot, while Istvan left this computer) and very good GFX and Sound emulation capabilities, you can play a lot with.
It needs a little more processing power, but runs great on my A64 3000+

For TED dying there were several topics. Most typical cause of "TED is dead" is the heat (some applied spartan Z80 IC heatsink) and the supppper autofire Joysticks of C64. The later may kill your TED within days, doing some short circuiting in the background with Autofire function. There was a topic how to select the right ones.
One more thing: reducting the indirect heat in Plussy is made by some smart guys by switching to newer type EPROM from ROM with the same content (if I remember well) and it reduced those ICs power consumption (and heat production) by 70%.

And I am the Off topc king! grin

Welcome back MMS happy Wondering where you'd gone? Youre the dude from Hungary who offered me the free tape decks for parts hey? Looks like your countryman Csabo has relocated to Canada. There is a small hungarian population in australia but i guess its much larger in the US (Kaplan's; hollywood families) & Canada. Anyhow thanks for the great tips reagrding autofire joystics on the 16. Guess what i was using to play xargon wars? Yep Quickshot2 with rapid autofire....guess you saved me a lot of trouble with TEDS. Version 1.4 Yape is what i installed on p4 1.6ghz XP pro 40gb/hd, but that is now experiencing ''Boot Failure''.
MIK gotta say that i now call them Personal Curses (PC's) & am surpised you got them working on old pentiums? My oldies have tons of probs like missing or corrupted drivers or hardware failures not to mention software troub's (Can i still strangle that rich Microsoft guy?). Checked out your links & gotta say that the heatsink looks really cool but would need some serious soldering experience to accomplish without damaging the MB.
Before HD trouble i tried to load my .prg's from sd2 collection; they just showed characters & letters constantly reappearing on screen; nice mono colour choices though * wait 4 it...saw an option to choose 256kb Hannes memory. Was this for real back in the day?
Is there a link where i can just click once & download the entire Top50 collection from this site as.TAP format? Will now check out Myriad... Thanks Guys !!!!!!!!!

Hi Retro76!
Finally today I successfully repaired the keyboard USB driver on Win7, so I am pretty glad happy
Wifi internet also got a 2x boost, so no need to complain today...

Send me a PM with your address. I can send you 1 1530 and two 1531s, as I do not need them, though I cannot grant working condition. before that I will calculate the postage cost.

About problem PCs: I have that is 8 years old, pretty robust one, Shuttle SN97G5. (I am writing from a real problem PC now: Dell XPS 210: lot of troubles with memory, freezing, but all solved now).
No way to upgrade it further (maybe a dual core S939 Opteron), as it is AGP and can handle only 2GB. But otherwise a very robust beast (was the game PC of 2004 or what happy ) and still pretty good for Internet, Internet gaming, limited gamplay (I just play Arx Fatalis, Rune and Sim3 on that: pretty good for oldy but funny games).
Yeah, games take too much time from me, and sometimes I feel the urge to create something, but receint I was in my less creative period.

Maybe try VICE C16/Plus4, I'm not sure how good the C16/Plus4 emulation is with that as I don't use it, but it should be more than good enough for what you need it for right now be it playing games to checking out stuff ect..., hope it works.
Link: http://vice-emu.sourceforge.net/

C16's are cooler than Plus/4's, as in there is a lot more room between the TED and the Keyboard for air to movie about inside. The Plus/4 is smaller and TED sits inside a metal shield case bang in the middle. With that in mind it would be easier to pin a heatsink to TED on a Plus/4 from the outer shielding. Generally though C16's TED or CPU fail less than Plus/4 so a bit more important to have a heat sink on a Plus/4 as it were.

I would not know how to hold a heat sink in place on a C16, I would love to see how it could be done. Maybe some plastic hair clips would do it,(not). wink

Re: c64/vic20 to c16 Datasette adapter

Just donloaded vice2.4 x86 large 32.7mb file onto my usb. I remmber having an older version & had it working for a 64 emulation but the screen was very small.
I have a hp dv6500 laptop which has been mostly rock-solid since 2006 & niow has win7 home ed. This is the only hope for any emulation programs. I was using usb prepaid modem but the reception is very poor in my area, so too is adsl2. My only hope for permanent interent is cable but it costs around $100 per month, hardly worthwhile if you don't constantly download movies, clips & games. Youre pretty lucky to getting things working fine again MMS happy When probs start for me it is always one thing after another. I too have huge freezing problem with a x64 p4 3ghz machine with win7, howd you fix this freeze prob?
I will work out now how to PM (private message) you & regarding the heatsinks MIK, kopsec seems to be a bit of an electronics guru & may know how to place it into c16 happy
Hope he reads this & gets back !
I am not a GateCrasher, just a Gate(s)Basher ! I figure the guy has caused me around 30 years of terrible pain, loss (data) & suffering & therefore owes me around $1M US. If you read this Billy Boy just buy me a high-tech 3D Printer & all will be forgiven (no more bad karma's i promise) happy

There are heatsinks with good adhesive to hold them. There is a thread about this on lemon

http://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=50725

You can find on ebay:

WOW VGA Ram Heatsinks !
Kopsec have you done this before on commodore computers ?
The thread has stated that lack of sinks will damage the SID in long-term.
I would like to say that living in a cooler environment actually prolongs the life of your computer circuits. Fact in point: when i lived in Western Sydney (large flat & hot city) computers had an average life span of 3-4 years. Now living in the Blue Mountains which is on average 8-10c cooler, i have not had computer circuit failure. Just one elecrtical fault which caused a dyeing power supply to smoke up. These days they all come with circuit/surge/electriclal portection anyhow. Hope this all helps !

Thank you Retro76.

I'm not an Electronics Genius, just Electronics Engineer wink

Regarding the adhesive on heatsinks I haven't tested, but I would look for adding an alternative fixing just in case it loses stickyness. (plastic ties perhaps).
