Well, first I did do a search, but I used "1541 - III" and got nothing but my own post. Now I try "1541-III" and I see some results.
Here's a question for someone: I did not see anything in the posts about the fact that this device ONLY does PRG file types. No SEQ,USR, or REL. Lots of "PRG" programs have "SEQ" or maybe "USR" embedded. Is this not a big limitation for a disk drive replacement?

I'm not sure what you mean when you say PRG programs have SEQ or USR embedded. I thought they don't... or maybe you meant Jim Hehl's self-extractors? That would be one case when a PRG really could have a SEQ file embedded in it - but even that needs a disk, or a D64.
Because the device supports D64 images, you should be able to run any software that writes to/reads from SEQ files.

My point is that the author of 1541-III has stated to me that his project only recognizes PRG files. So a line of code in a PRG file calling a SEQ file(OPEN2,8,2,"DATA,S,W") will fail in 1541-III. Not because of the D64 format, but because his 1541 emulator is not programmed to recognize SEQ (or USR or REL) file types. The same is true for C64TPC, which I own and works very well as a hard disk for the plus 4, but, only for PRG files. Both of these 1541 emulators avoid use of the PC's parallel port and it is too bad they are both limited to PRG files on a D64 image. If I've missed something, please let me know. I would like nothing better that to be able to eliminate the physical disk drive, and eliminate use of the PC parallel port, but keep the physical plus4.

1541-III emulates only the serial IEC protocol and the usual CBM DOS commands. And even that only partially AFAIK. In theory, it could do more (including but not limited to SEQ, USR, REL), at least as much as any emulator out here. The source is written in C and is available under the GNU GPL so it could be improved upon easily.

If you spoke to him directly then you must have more up-to-date info than I do. All I did was visit the above link, and I saw that the first feature is:
"Opening .D64 image files and accessing them as if they were real 5.25" disks"
Maybe that's not exactly right then. Your best bet is either asking him directly or getting your hands on one and testing it.

When it appeared, I tried to find more details.
Maybe I am wrong, but I remember well, it can read/write D64 for single file transfer fits to standard protocol. No fastloaders, tricks, etc. Due to that, lof of games and demos will probably not run. If you check the list of tested prg, you can mainly find single filedemos.
But maybe my memory just betrayed me 
If I remember well, there is a better device with SD card support, just cannot revive it's name...

Maybe if I ask the question in another way: Is there anybody out there who is willing to say that they would have no problem trading their 1541 for a 1541 replacement/emulator that ONLY processes PRG on a disk image??

Well, just about me: I like demos, and the best ones need on-PRG level load.
Also my fav games are: Bard's Tale3, Battle Chess, Laser Squad. They all need proper drive emu
So, for me only a very accurate emulation would worth the money to be invested (pls do not forget it is a real expensive piece of hardware, so...).
But first I have to get the real HW to run with

Do you mean NKCElectronics.com SD2IEC, Jim Brain's uIEC/SD, or even Gideon Zweijtzer's 1541 Ultimate?

some years passed, no news on that topic :-)
Right now I am a proud owner of 6 Plus/4, 3 C64, 1 ZX Spectrum and a non-working Amiga500 (grrr), +1571, 1541/II and 2pcs 1541 (+1 nonworking 1541) I decided to sell away some of the HW to buy some newer stuff for the remaining kids :-)
I plan to buy an uIEC/SD, seems to impress every owner. No clue, if fully compatible with fastoaders. 60USD + shipping
Also a Zoomfloppy, in case I am able to finish any of my work :-) 35USD+ shipping
These will support Plus/4 and C64 too.
Only one small problem is the cassette port for uIEC: it uses the C64 style one, though I do not have any converter cable (but has 6 of datasets).
Maybe sacrifice one or two for the goodwill of the livings :-) But a professional solution wold be better.
Anyone who want to sell such a converter cable?

Hi,
These things cannot work with Plus/4 (especially not with C16) due to cartrige surface
As 1541 Ultimate has a high Commodore compatibility mode, it is the ideal for +4/C16, supporting fastloaders, etc
BUT because we can use only a small part of all features, from price/performance point of view it has troubles. Cost ~100€, but you cannot use Ethernet and Final Cartride part (as for that Interface board connection needed, which fits to C64/C128 only), also DMA loading is not possible. So you pay a lot of featured built in, but you cannot use.
SD2IEC is also OK, and much cheaper (60€ with dautherboard). It also able to support some fastloaders, but less compatible... Who knows, if higher compatibility worth 40€ extra ?
uIEC/SD is new for me. Seems to be the cheapest, ~65USD (~45€?) with shipping cost, and using SD2IEC firmaware... Prob ably the same compatibility. Very small.

MMS: I can't find it now but I seem to remember to have read somewhere that you can order the datasette port adapter to be C16/plus/4 one instead of the C2N type.
Edit: found it at http://www.go4retro.com/products/uiec/:
"uIEC draws power via a cassette port “pigtail”. Thus, CBM SX-64, Plus/4, and C16 users must request alternate power supply functionality when ordering."
