Again, to me this sounds like a caching problem. The only way you can get PMs is if you are logged in. Login cookies are set for one year, so finishing the session does not log you out.
Sounds like you're using Opera. I don't have it installed here, but I'm sure it has a setting somewhere on when/how to cache pages. You should try setting the browser to the equivalent of "disable cache" or "always get new pages from server", see if that helps.
Alternatively, when you go to the forum post page (which is /forumpost.php), you could try sticking a random query string to the end of the URL. (An example would be: /forumpost.php?randomvalue=1234) This will be ignored by everything, but it usually tricks the browser (and the server) into thinking you're visiting a new URL, so it should NOT use a cached page.
