I have managed to write a preliminary multicolor mode conversion, although I think it is far from being really good yet, and there are probably bugs to be fixed. A comparison of this experimental code with the already existing interlaced hires mode and DFliConv is available:

Well, it is probably somewhat disappointing, as either the advantages of multicolor mode do not offset the loss of resolution, or the conversion needs a lot of improvement. At least to me it seems the high resolution mode looks obviously better, but this may also depend on the source image.
