OUCH! I was so hoping that it was something as simple as a cable problem, but no such luck. I picked up two Plus/4 units, and both appear to have the same problem. My cables work fine with a C64 (I hooked up to the front and rear of a 1702, and then used the RF cable into a TV), but I get a black screen with red and green diagonal "noise" and no audio with either of the Plus/4s. No luck with the disk drive either. The drive powers up with both Plus/4s, but the LOAD attempt gets no response. Looks like I picked up a couiple of display units! Thanks for the help.
