You can double the speed of the +4 by ...

switching off the screen during complex calculations, this might not be suitable for games, however.

If you need to know how to do this, I can post a small program.

ZX81 FAST mode

I guess your routine must work like FAST mode on the ZX81. If you switch the screen off and on fast enough it is suitable for some games, like chess etc.
