Description
If you use the recorder to save your programs, you will have realized how fast cassettes grow, and how quickly becomes very difficult to remember which tape a certain program is on. This Cataloger will help you to rationally organize your tape library, compiling the list of programs present on each cassette, complete with their position on the tape (given by the reading of the counter on the recorder) and their memory occupation (i.e. their length expressed in bytes).

Let's assume that, if you want the Cataloger to be really effective, your programs must be recorded on the cassette one after the other, without empty spaces. This is easily achieved with the following procedure, which most of you will be familiar with: every time you have to save a new program, you position the tape correctly by checking the last program recorded on it. Initially, the Cataloger asks you if you want to print the list of programs; in fact, if you have a Commodore or compatible printer, the list can be automatically printed on paper as well as displayed on the screen. If so, you are reminded to turn on the printer, after which you will have to set the name of the box, the side (1 or 2) and the date of cataloging; finally the program asks you to rewind the tape and reset the counter. At this point the exploration of the cassette begins, which takes place by verifying the programs that are gradually encountered through a machine language routine, and each time you are asked to read the counter on the recorder; in this phase the list is compiled (and eventually printed). If you already know where the last program ends, set the "*" character in place of the counter number when the recorder stops at that point. Otherwise, when you have reached an area of the tape where you are sure that there are no more programs, keep the RUN / STOP key pressed until a BREAK message appears; then type GOTO700 and press RETURN. In both cases, however, the question LIST (S / N / C)? Appears on the screen: by pressing S the list is shown on the screen which, if you do not have a printer, you will have to transcribe on a sheet of paper; pressing C starts the printer, giving you a further copy of the list; finally pressing N ends the program.
