This sounds like some level balancing circuit broke in the monitor.
Another thing that one can notice on cheap monitors is that using big contrasts can distort the picture (i.e. moving a white bar on a mostly black background will stretch the picture where the white bar currently is). If Levente was still on the list, he could certainly explain the causes of these phenomena.
