Did you try to format a fresh disk? If that doesn't work, it's very probably the r/w head that is broken. Pretty common problem with those Newtronics D500
drives. The good thing is, you can use a complete drive mech from a 1541 as a replacement (maybe after rewiring the plugs a little bit).
