Subject: Compo suggestions
Hi Everyone,

Well I have a lot to say this time, if you are interested in the C=16
democompo please read carefully and comment.

Back in 1995 while the internet tracking scene was hot, I have participated in several open internet music compos, starting from The Trackering, then Cruelisation and then Groovy Compo. (The best place I ever got was second...
:-( ehh, never mind.) These compos have gone through a natural evolution.
The entry and voting process got better and better, more and more refined over the time. The MC series was also very well thought out - we can learn a lot from their scoring system. So based on this experience, I'm proposing a few general rules:

1* All entries must be new, original creations.

I guess this one makes sense to everyone, right?

2* All entries will be shown (released) at the same time by the organizer
(Lavina). It is not allowed to show or release your work before the compo deadline (other than your team members).

Why? If someone sees the other stuff before their own entry is finished,
they would have an unfair advantage.

3* (not really) The entries must be anonymus - well, not for a democompo I guess. We all want to put our name on it, right? ;-)

But generally, for other compos this is a really important and good idea:
You will get much more realistic scoring, if we all really judge the entries by what we see and hear. Be honest with yourself: when you see an entry by a BIG NAME, you tend to rank it higher... Anyways, as I said, for this democompo we don't need that rule.

The rest is about the voting/judging/scoring:

4* Everyone who enters must vote, otherwise they are disqualified.

If you guys don't like this - fine, but for the music compos it made a lot of sense, it prevented people from just sending in their stuff and not voting for everyone else's.

5* Anyone can vote - provided that they have a NAME and an EMAIL address.

I don't think anonymus votes make sense.

6* You cannot vote for your own work, or your teammates work.

I think that's fair. I surely don't want to rank my own demo.

7* Voting. Here comes the tricky part.

- Vote for each entry with a score of 0 to 10 and a general comment.

** OR **

- Vote for each entry by
- Overall Feel
- Technical Difficulty
- Originality
- Graphics Design
- Music Quality

Each would require a number from 0 to 10, and the Overall Feel would count 3
times "heavier" than the others. This is probably an overkill - let's keep it simple, right?

In both cases all the scores get added up and an average is calculated -
highest wins. Then we publish the votes and the comments (without the names of course).

All of this is easiest when we have a voting program, that collects the entries, let's you vote and sends your vote to LVN. On his side the final scores are calculated and a comment file is generated... Who will write the voting program? I'd be glad to.

Well, that's all. Wonder what y'all think about all of this.

Other stuff:

> Luca: I will write the article hopefully this week. Glad to hear you have entered - that's the spirit.

> SVS: I have fixed the problem with Alex/Fire - thanks for pointing it out.
Real names for the other members??? Also the Groups page on the P4DB has been updated: now you can see the Scene groups vs. Commercial companies. The number of members and number of softwares is also there. Nice... (the only problems is that it's that it's very inaccurate...)

> Chicken: the LOD Player will be published with full source code (hopefully today).

BTW, after the compo I will publish the full source of our demo as well.

Coming up:
- Two small new utilities (a gfx and a sound converter)
- Tom Thumb and Trailblazer music remix...

Take care,

Csabo
