Also, incrementing the horizontal resolution to e.g. 60 columns (80 would be too much for the RF output, at least if one wants to read the text on the screen) would have resulted in a higher clock rate, but it would also have required more memory in the video chip.

Not that I would know. There are some Hungarian character sets on ftp.funet.fi, but I don't remember whether any of them are for the 264
series. [Of course you can use them on the plus/4, at least if you strip the revresed characters. BTW, one character set from Commodore has a bug in the reversed @ sign: it's not the exact inverse of the normal @ sign.
The bug occurs only in one bank (switched by shift/cbm).]
