 Out On A Limb Remake

Hiya all,

Would you do me a favour and see what you think of the work Ive done so far on the remake of this great game. Its far from finished, missing sound in area's, the sprites need to be completed and the next two levels need making. So please dont judge so harshly but please be honest. The url is http://www.commodore16.com/Games/Out%20On%20A%20Limb.zip its been packaged with a installer and is about 4.5 meg so far.

Am rather nervous as this is my first go and making a remake.

Thanks alot,

Chris

Re: Out On A Limb Remake

For a first effort, it's not bad.

When making a remake, one of the main considerations should be to remain as faithful to the original as possible. So you should probably choose spiders and ducks for those sprites, instead of the sun and a rabbit. The original allows the player to jump up while not moving sideways, but yours doesn't. And the overall feel of your game is nothing like the original, the movement is much faster, falling from high places doesn't kill you, falling off a screen places you on the ground below, reaching higher platforms is "different" - it's enough to "jump into" it instead of "onto" them. This is not necessarily a bad thing - I think the consensus on the original was that it's not that good of a game, and definitely pretty tough, but this means your game is not much of a remake but rather a new game similar to OOAL.

The graphics needs a lot of work. Am I the only one that notices things like such as the tree trunk doesn't touch the ground (it seems to be one pixel above). Maybe that's a video card problem. Also, the cover scan seems to be stored as a BMP. You should check if the engine you are using allows images to be stored as JPG or some other compressed format, because as it is, it takes up a staggering amount of space in your .GAM file.

And there are of course the obvious bugs: the player can fall out of the screen on both sides, but they don't die! Nothing to do but shut down the game.

Good luck with the project though!

Thanks Csabo,

Your right it still needs alot of work to be done, it may take some time but I'm really enjoying it. I did notice the sun and the spider shouldnt really be there, was planning on changing them. But didnt notice the 1 pixel between the trunk and the floor, cheers. Sometimes it takes an other pair of eyes to notice certain things. Oh by the weay hope you dont mind but I borrowed your cover scans for the first two screens. These will be replaced with a proper game entry screen soon.

Thanks happy
