Well, actually I dont think converting is sped up a lot with the source.. on the contrary - in addition to converting you may also have to deal with different assembler directives etc..
That said - converting is really pointless. In most cases you do not have to understand anything about the program you are converting, especially when it comes to demos. It may have been interesting in the past when people just had one homecomputer, but nowadays you can just buy a C64 or download an emulator
