-- 1st: Yes 5.25" disks could be domaged by X-rays scans, EEPROM should not.
I had the same problems years ago, when I swapped by snail mail: all European mail is airwaied then X-rays scanned. If disks were not shielded by aluminium foils, then they were unreadables to destination. Never had problems with Eeproms.
-- 2nd: take with you the disks in aircraft, because the bags/goods-room of aircraft is not pressured, and this too is a problem for 5.25" disks (the internal dish will "glue" to the packing).
