The Plus/4 is not at fault. If anything is broken it's always a C16+64k version. 
Maybe the prisoner is a guard in disguise and he's anticipating his buddies will ambush you. 
Very odd bug, all that effort to port it and then leave it broken? 
I hate the foot steps on C64, annoying, but hope the sound can be improved in yours.
