Magica is a good choice for plain, fullscreen pictures. I do believe it is limited to full screen (320x200) pictures. It is able to handle other formats (more details here), but the most common format is Botticelli. Erich has created TONS of picture shows (see Botticelli Bilderdisk).
What format are the pictures that you're trying to show?
