Try joystick? The clunky timing of it's movement felt ok with a joystick on a real machine. Sometimes tho "not the best coded games" play faster on keyboard, (joystick slows them down) and maybe that's not helping with the timing? The game does have a charm of it's own tho and maybe deserves a better look than we were willing to give it.
