Stick with the cheese rolls, can't go wrong with they. 
As for your C16, joystick adapters are the best way to save the ports. If you already did use these then be more careful and 'don't' let them hang freely in the air, let them rest on the table. One thing I did, Atari ST adapters have a plastic thing holding the cables together in the middle, I cut one off. I added a new topic which adds a bit more and maybe it might give you an idea for something similar.
