It's possible for Ted to be damaged and still function. Normally joyports, keyboard and datasette port can be signs of something is up. Sometimes more than one of these will be faulty, and it's been known for all 3 to be faulty at the same time. The only fix is a new Ted chip.

That said, if you press the joystick in different directions and you see random characters printing on screen in BASIC, and not the normal characters as you see in Yape emulator then that's a sure sign Ted is faulty.

Crazy abuse of auto fire and keyboard mashing can also be a cause of joyports and keyboard faults. Like wise Sega pads can damage Ted chips in the same way.

It's also been known for joystick adapters to be wired wrong, this is very 'rare' but some did show up around 15 years ago. Old ones from the 1980's are normally fine though.
