One hand on joystick, Shift Lock down for Auto Fire and one hand on Spare Bar works best. Try and save your shields for the busy stages. You get an extra shield when you loop the type of stages it offers, about 10 or so but be ready as the difficaulty increases.
When your rusty it can feel quick but once your warmed up and start making good use of the Shields your find 10k+ scores are possible.
BTW, for those that may not know... if you wait around 10 seconds on the title screen a high score table will show.
