Maybe they did not make it intentionally so slow. But a much faster would not hurt 
I see they tried to realize a lot of functions.
The worst thing is that you cannot predefine or save/load the string content, I mean not easily.
I am just checking the disassembled ROM code (by Mike Dailly) at $DB35 to understand why it is so slow
