You can set the lengths of these 8 texts at address $55F-566. Simply write eight zeroes from this address. If you want to redefine them to some special one-letter value so your program can react, set their lengths to 1s, and the area 0567-05E6 contains their text definitions. The strings here are packed, so your eight single-letter strings occupy exactly 8 bytes from $567.
In MONITOR, type
>055F 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01
>0567 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48
and the function keys will write A, B, C...
