C16 no longer says "Press Play On Tape" ?!?!

After I've typed load and return my C16 immediately starts searching and the screen goes blank.
Now if a cassette is in there it loads and runs fine. But I'm having a nightmare recording.
Does anyone have any ideas? Is once of the chips about to frazzle itself?

It almost sounds as if the C16 thinks the PLAY button is pressed down as that is the only way you can skip the PRESS PLAY ON TAPE message after typing LOAD..., and why it will not show if that was so.

Try removing the 1531 from your C16 and type LOAD again, if the PRESS PLAY ON TAPE message appears then something is up with the 1531.

I've already done that and it still does it.
My 1531 was an issue. I wonder if it's done any damage to something.

It would load OK but wouldn't save on either the C16 or C64.

Re: C16 no longer says "Press Play On Tape" ?!?!

If the same thing is happening on a C64 then the 1531 might be faulty, like a bent pin, a broken wire or a small screw has come loose and is now jammed making a short? If you have a 1530 for your C64 and that works fine then you know of course.

The only thing I've done to fix C16/Plus4's in the past are change chips and from what I've seen my gut feeling says there is a chance it may of damaged the TED chip in your C16...

As you may know Megadrive pads can damage the TED and crazy Auto Fire features on a joystick can sometimes damage the TED over time. Sometimes the keyboard is knocked out at the same time the joystick fault appears. On the surface it can look like the machine is 99.9% working yet like a software bug that fault is hiding within the TED chip as if one of the connections are faulty.

It's not an issue I have come across but if you have a spare TED that would be the first thing I would check but before you do... DO NOT use this 1531 on your C16, get hold of another 1531 that you know is working and test it on your C64 before testing it on your C16...and do this before trying a new TED.

I can confirm it is not the TED chip (*phew*) as it still does the same thing on a spare.

Re: C16 no longer says "Press Play On Tape" ?!?!

Cassette sense on the C16 is implemented using the 74LS125 at U11, a tri-state buffer. However, this is also used to drive the joystick selects, so if your joysticks are working OK, it's unlikely that.

The other possibility is that the cassette sense line is being pulled to ground. Check for shorts, the ceramic capacitor at c25, and the 3.3k pull-up resistor at r12.
