Wow, that's different! Was this in the original?
The dramatic departure from "let's knock out the bricks" idea makes me wish something like Break Quest would be possible. (Off topic: I bought a license for this more than a decade ago, which got lost during one of my computer hops - I just checked and the game is now free! http://nurium.com/breakquest.html)
