I've just read through SVS's post again: if you use a 1551 then a reset is required. With a real machine you have to turn on the 1551 first and then the computer. Or you have to press reset if you reversed the order. The reason behind this is that the reset routine in the computer initializes the registers on the 1551 paddle and when you switch the drive on after this then it will be in undefined state as Gaia wrote. However you should have no such problems with a 1541 because it does not require any special initialization on the computer side.
But I think you're using the 1551 IEC compatibility mode. wink
