 |  It's many years I played with it,
but if I don't remember wrong:
D on screen stands for "Deep" (under sea surface measure)
STATUS means the distance from ths submarine and the enemy ship (Green: no enemy ship; Yellow: far enemy ship: Red: near enemy ship AND possibility to view it by periscope.
You can have an idea of the distance from the ennemy ship by listening to the sonar inpulse delay (long delay = no ship or far ship, etc.).
It's possible the enemy ship is able to detect you, then it change its route to avoid conflict
