Bil Herd (the chief engineer on the project) recalled that there may have been a resistor on the die that should not have been there. The original HMOS-I 7501 ran a bit cooler and the final production run of the 8501 in 1990 had the issue corrected to they run *much* cooler.

You should heatsink it if you can. Old PC graphics cards are a good source of small heatsinks.
