By the way, have you tried using the "pixel exact" image reading ? This would allow for avoiding the dither, and converting a .gif image that already uses the Plus/4 palette (with the colors in the exact same order, and preferably no transparency - this way, the converter should recognize that it is indeed using the Plus/4 palette, even if it is from different emulators) to multicolor mode with the least possible error.
In fact, there have been some conversions of "Neptune's daughter" in this topic earlier, and I think I still have the files somewhere.
