About 7 years ago I had a closer look at that game and I even remembered where I put my notes. Couldn't resist to check if they are still there 
The keyboard control table is located at...
>12A4 DF 02 EF 40 FD 04 7F 40
>12AC 7F 10 FB 80 F7 10 FE 10
... these are $FD30/$FF08 values (in pairs). Now you can redefine the keys to your liking. On plus/4, I like using the cursor keys (and left the others untouched).
