Actually, its not pixel based, its boun bounding box based. This means you don't have to hit every pixel in the baddie. It also helps make the game far more playable.

Sprite to sprite is BBox.
Player Bul sprite is BBox
Baddie Bul to player is character
Player to background is character.
Player to turret is Part of the background collision.
