Yes. it is my understanding that two 1551s, fresh from original package (no modifications) can be plugged into the Plus/4 and assign their own device numbers. The one plugged into the Plus/4 would be device 8, and the one plugged into device 8's paddle would be device 9.
I presume that 8 has to be powered before 9 will be 9, otherwise 9 would be 8....
In this case, an 8/9 switch is not necessary ....... unless one has a 1541 that they need to be 8, and the 1551 as 9. In this case the switch would be needed to prevent the 1551 from taking over as 8.
I think I just answered my own question.
