|  Best method to image disks
Hi
I have some real 5 1/4 inch disks I want to image so they can be used on a emulator.
There seems to be several ways of doing this
1) Commodore computer + 1541 + SD2IEC + disk copier software
2) Commodore Computer + 1541 + XE1541 parallel port adapter + VC1541 + disk copier software (I am only guessing about this one)
3) 1541 + XE1541 parallel port adapter + star commander + DOS
4) 1541 + XA1541 parallel port adapter + CBM-Transfer + Windows
5) 1541 + parallel port adapter + Vice Emulator + Windows + disk copier software
But I have some questions.
I have a C64, 1541, Plus4, 1551 and a few parallel port adapters.
- What 'disk copier software' should I use to copy from disk to disk? (makes disk images when using a virtual device)
- Is using CBM Transfer the best method?
- when I copy/select all files from disk to another rather than using a disk copy, does this copy everything?
- will this BASIC command 'COPY D1 TO D0' work to copy disks?
- My disks are normal unprotected disks, but other than using a Nibbler setup are there any other ways to copy protected disks?

I have a C64C, a Plus4, a 1541 and 1541-II drives and a WinXP laptop connected to a Zoomfloppy and with OpenCBM installed. I've been able to use it to copy .d64 images to real disks, but the opposite direction should work. Try it.

Hi,
For disk-to-disk copy have a look at Utility/Copy.
Copying from real disk to computer I'd recommend a 1541 and an XU or XUM adapter (like ZoomFloppy) with CBM-Transfer on Windows/Linux.
Copying disk images to SD2IEC is also a good solution.
If you select all files it can work if the disk is real standard DOS floppy disk, storing files. Programs with custom loaders (most full-disk games and demos) should be copied as disk images because they do not store their data in standard files.
Unfortunately the BASIC COPY command with logical drives can be used to copy between units of a dual disk drive (drives that use a single device number and two logical drives in that). I'm not aware any of them that could be connected to the plus/4 easily.

This is very useful information.
One gizmo I did not mention is the Pi1541 which supports fastloaders and the .g64 file format because it emulates all of the drivers hardware.
This might be a noobie question, but is a XUM1541 adapter the same a ZoomFloppy adapter? (i understand the cheap adapters do not have the parallel port or edge connector on them).
Will the cheap adapter run NIBTools with a 1571 for imaging copy protected disks or are they all different.
Update
ZoomFloppy is the original adapter that supports Commodore PET and is a full implementation for the firmware. XUM1541 use the same firmware but tend to be cut down versions so just do the basics.
Solution
1) Commodore 1571 + ZoomFloppy + NIBTools
2) Commdore 1541 with Parallel mod + ZoomFloppy + NIBTools
3) KyroFlux - If you know what you are doing

I have a version of the Zoomfloppy that works on a real C1541 without a parallel port. I bought it with a connection that I thought I didn't need. I'm wondering if I actually needed the connection, because I hear that it isn't supported, and my system does.

My understanding is:
1) ZoomFloppy + 1541 without the parallel mod = read/write/image standard disks only
2) ZoomFloppy + 1541 with the parallel mod = read/write/image standard and protected disks + speed is 300% quicker
The 1571 supports nibbling natively.
3) ZoomFloppy + 1571 without the parallel mod = read/write/image standard and protected disks.
4) ZoomFloppy + 1571 with the parallel mod = read/write/image standard and protected disks. This option is pointless as there is no benefit.
So you can use the ZoomFloppy to do disk operations on a 1541 without a parallel mod but it is better to have this.
